BROCKPORT, NY (November 18, 2016) — The Vassar College women's basketball team (1-1) cruised to an 90-63 win over Morrisville State College (1-1) at the Brockport Tip-Off Classic on Friday. The 90 points were the second-most since single game highs were kept, starting in 2000.
Friday's high-scoring affair was the result of four Brewers reaching double figures: Freshman Sophie Nick paced the team for the second straight game with 16 points, adding a team-best 13 boards for her first collegiate double-double; Isa Peczuh also contributed 16 points on eight shots, shooting 4-of-5 from three; Nicole Teta tallied 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting; and Maeve Sussman finished with 10 points, adding five assists as well.
The Brewers were lights out from all over the floor, shooting 47 percent from the floor and 46 percent from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Mustangs shot 38 and 25 percent, respectively. Vassar also won the battle of the boards, grabbing 49 rebounds to Morrisville's 33.
Three Mustangs reached double-digit scoring: Jordan Anderson led the team with 17 points on 7-of-20 shooting, Haley Kilmartin finished with 14 on 5-of-10 shooting and Tori Rockefeller added 13 on eight attempts.
Vassar came out relentlessly, netting the first eight field goals over the first seven minutes for an 18-2 advantage. Those eight buckets came off the hands of six different Brewers, as they were able to share the ball early and often.
Morrisville knocked down a pair of free throws before Anderson hit a jumper for its first field goal at the 3:58 mark. The Mustangs pulled within single digits, 22-14, thanks to another Anderson basket, with 47 seconds remaining in the quarter.
The Brewers kept their opponents scoreless the remainder of the period to take a 27-14 lead into the second stanza. The Mustangs opened the period with a 22-11 run to knot the game at 38-all with 3:06 left in the half.
Peczuh buoyed the Brewers back on top with a triple, as they sustained a single-digit lead into the break, 45-40.
Both sides exchanged buckets to open the new half before Vassar scored six of the final eight points to take a 61-51 advantage into the final frame.
Morrisville netted the first basket of the fourth to pull within single digits once more before Vassar scored 24 of the final 30 points to seal its first win of the young season.
On the other side of the bracket, D'Youville College and The College At Brockport face off on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Vassar will meet the winner of that contest in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m.
