Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Balanced Brewers Top Clarkson, 85-70

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 29, 2015) – The Vassar College men's basketball team looked balanced, as the Brewers ran past the Clarkson University Golden Knights, 85-70, at home Friday night.

After taking two of three games on the road, the Brewers came home hungry for more. Vassar wasted no time getting ahead, using a 20-1 run to take a 22-6 lead midway through the first half. Jesse Browne highlighted the surge with 10 points, including back-to-back triples.

"We were able to get into a good rhythm early in the game, and it was just an incredible victory for us," head coach BJ Dunne said. "I'm really proud of the effort from all of our guys."

Browne (Barrington, RI/Deerfield Academy) paced the Brewers with 23 points, while Mickey Adams (Boston, MA/St. Sebastian's School) scored a career-best 18 and Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) finished with 15.

"This is who we thought Mickey was going to be," Dunne said. "He has all the tools. He's physical, he can play in-and-out, he can obviously make the three and he just really goes through spurts where he can really score and be aggressive."

Adams would later be a catalyst in the second half, scoring six points in the final five minutes to help the Brewers win their second straight.

The Brewers appeared balanced, with bench players providing additional sparks throughout the contest. Junior Ryan Huegel (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Briarcliff) played a career-game, earning bests in points (seven), rebounds (six) and assists (four) in 22 minutes.

"Ryan was huge," Dunne said. "He's done a great job of stepping up when called upon. He's ready… He brings an intensity, defensively. He guards his man, guards his gap. Obviously those charges that he took were huge. He's a strong guard, and he can finish at the rim."

The Brewers took their largest lead, a 20-point advantage, in the first half before taking a 48-32 edge into the locker room.

Vassar kept Clarkson at arm's length, as the Golden Knights would only get within single digits twice the rest of the way.

Three Golden Knights scored in double figures: Derek Hart had 20 points, Felix Abongo contributed 19 and Drew Zlogar added 15, as Clarkson dropped its second straight to fall to 7-11 overall and 4-5 in the Liberty League.

Vassar shot 51 percent from the floor and 50 percent from deep (12-of-24), while holding Clarkson to 47 and 26 (5-of-19) percent, respectively.

With the win, the Brewers improve to 9-9 and 5-4 in conference play.

Vassar has a quick turnaround, as it hosts St. Lawrence University in the Athletics and Fitness Center on Saturday at 4 p.m.
