ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY (January 26, 2016) — The Vassar College women's basketball team beat Bard College, 71-59, behind freshman
Nicole Teta's career-best 23 points Tuesday night.
Teta (Maspeth, NY/Archbishop Molloy) more than doubled her previous best of 11 points by shooting 58 percent from the floor with four 3-pointers at Bard's Stevenson Athletic Center.
Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) added 12 points and four rebounds,
Alex Moon (Mission Hills, CA/Bishop Alemany) finished with a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) and
Rose Serafini (Milton, ON, CAN/Milton District) chipped in with seven points and 12 rebounds.
The Brewers shot 41 percent from the floor and 37 percent from deep, while holding the Raptors to 34 and 38 percent, respectively.
With the win, Vassar improves to 4-12 overall and 2-6 in conference play, while Bard falls to 5-13 and 0-9 in the Liberty League.
After
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) put the Brewers on the board, the Raptors scored eight unanswered. No matter. Vassar knot it at 8-8 thanks to two baskets from Moon and one from
Maddie Leong (Atascadero, CA/Atascadero). The quarter featured two ties thereafter before the Brewers took a 14-12 edge into the second quarter.
Rosenthal and Teta combined for 19 points in the second quarter to help the Brewers carry a four-point, 38-34, lead into the break.
The Brewers broke out with a 15-4 surge to start the second half to take a 15-point, 53-38, lead with less than two minutes left in the quarter.
The Brewers kept the Raptors at arm's length into the fourth period, but Bard refused to back down. With 2:19 to go, Bianka Bell drained a 3-pointer to put the Raptors within two, 60-58.
Vassar scored 11 of the final 12 points to snap a four-game losing streak and hand Bard its ninth-straight loss.
Bell scored 23 points for the Raptors, while Tytravia Riley finished with 20 points and 22 rebounds.
The Brewers return to Poughkeepsie for a five-game homestretch, beginning with a 6 p.m. game versus Clarkson University on Friday at the Athletics and Fitness Center.
