Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Layup Lifts Clarkson over Vassar, 57-55

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 29, 2016) – Three Brewers scored in double figures, but the Vassar College women's basketball team fell 57-55, in the final seconds to Clarkson University on Friday.

With the loss, the Brewers drop to 4-13 overall and 2-7 in conference play, while the Golden Knights improve to 14-9 and 7-2 in the Liberty League.

Vassar led by as many as 10 points in the third quarter, but the Clarkson rallied with a 12-3 burst in the fourth to knot it at 51-all.

The Golden Knights didn't take their first lead until the final 10 seconds of the contest. The Brewers would tie it one final time before a layup lifted Clarkson over Vassar, 57-55, with three seconds remaining in regulation.

Sophomore Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) paced the Brewers with 14 points, senior Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, Ct/Nonnewaug) added 12 and freshman Nicole Teta (Maspeth, NY/Archbishop Molloy) chipped in with 11.

After scoring a career-best 23 points in Vassar's 71-59 win over Bard College on Tuesday, Teta picked up right where she left off. The freshman drained her first two shots, back-to-back triples, to push the Brewers' lead to eight, 20-12, in the first quarter.

But Clarkson slowly crawled back, using a 12-6 run to get within two, 26-24, in the second quarter. Madison Shea sparked the surge with consecutive layups, one to end the first and another to start the second.

The teams exchanged baskets to take a 30-all tie into their locker rooms.

Rosenthal came out of the break ready to go, scoring the first three Brewer baskets to put the team ahead, 36-32. The sophomore would go on to score 10 of her 14 total points in the third quarter, as Vassar took a 47-37 lead into the fourth.

The Brewers began to unravel in the final frame. The Golden Knights tied it twice before Shea rattled in a jumper to take a 55-53 edge with 9.7 seconds remaining. Teta answered back with a jumper of her own, but Ashley Loggins scored the game-winning layup for Clarkson to win its ninth in a row.

Clarkson pressed early and often to force 20 turnovers. The Golden Knights scored 21 points off the Brewers' giveaways, while Vassar scored 11 off Clarkson's 10.

Both teams shot 38 percent from the floor, and Vassar out-rebounded Clarkson 43-34.

The Brewers will be back in action Saturday when they face St. Lawrence University in the Athletics and Fitness Center at 2 p.m.
