GENEVA, NY (January 23, 2016) — The Vassar College women's basketball team outscored William Smith College in the final quarter, but ultimately fell 74-69 on the road Saturday.
With the loss, the Brewers fall to 3-12 on the season and 1-6 in conference play, while the Herons improve to 6-9 and 4-3 in the Liberty League.
Led by
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug), who totaled 21 points, nine rebounds and five steals, three Brewers scored in double digits.
Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) added 16 points and
Alex Moon (Mission Hills, CA/Bishop Alemany) had 10.
Both teams shot roughly 40 percent from the floor, but William Smith edged Vassar from beyond the arc with four 3-pointers. The Herons also made more than twice as many free throws, outscoring the Brewers' 20-9 from the line.
The first quarter went back-and-forth with four ties and four lead changes. Vassar last led 10-9, but William Smith ended the quarter on a 10-2 run.
The Herons extended their lead to 15, 36-21, with 3:22 left in the first half before taking a 42-33 advantage into the break.
The Brewers would get within one possession twice in the third quarter. Although they outscored the Herons, 20-14, in the final frame, they ultimately couldn't overcome a 15-point, second-quarter deficit.
Vassar refused to give up down the stretch and scored six straight points to get within one, 65-64, with three minutes remaining in regulation. The Brewers stayed within two possessions the rest of the way, but the Herons proved to be too much to handle.
Led by Mia Morrison's 15 points, all five Heron starters scored in double figures to total 62 of the team's 74 points.
Vassar will conclude its three-game road swing at Bard College for a 6 p.m. game Tuesday.
