ROCHESTER, NY (January 22, 2016) — The Vassar College women's basketball team got within one point with 18 seconds to go Friday, but Rochester Institute of Technology ultimately came out on top, 65-62.
With the loss, the Brewers fall to 3-11 overall and 1-5 in the conference, while the Tigers improve to 12-4, 5-2 in the Liberty League.
Led by
Caitlin Drakeley's (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug)15 points, three Brewers scored in double-figures.
Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) added 15 points, while
Colleen O'Connell (Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) finished with 11.
The Brewers won the battle of the boards for the ninth consecutive game, out-rebounding the Tigers, 46-41.
Rose Serafini (Milton, ON, CAN/Milton District) and
Alex Moon (Mission Hills, CA/Bishop Alemany) led the effort, pulling down a game-high 12 and 10 boards, respectively.
Vassar also shared the ball well, compiling 12 assists to RIT's 10. But with assists came turnovers, which proved to be the Brewers' downfall. The Tigers scored 16 points off the Brewers' 12 turnovers, while the Brewers scored just six points off the Tigers' nine.
The contest featured five ties and 10 lead changes, as both teams shot sub-40 percent.
RIT led the majority of the first half, but back-to-back baskets by Serafini and Rosenthal gave Vassar a 32-29 lead to go into intermission. The Brewers carried that lead throughout the third quarter and into the fourth, but the Tigers used a 17-7 run that spanned between the two periods to give them a five-point advantage with five minutes remaining.
Once RIT regained the lead, it never looked back. The Brewers got within one point three times thereafter — including a Drakeley layup with 18 seconds remaining that put them within one, 63-62 — but they were unable to get over the hump.
Two missed shots and a turnover down the stretch resulted in another basket for RIT at the buzzer.
Jessica Glaz scored a game-high 28 points for the Tigers, while Tara Lynch added 14.
Vassar looks to rebound Saturday against William Smith College in Geneva, NY at 2 p.m.
