What To Look ForThe Brewers look to get a quick jump on the season this weekend, taking advantage of one of five home dates this year. Vassar College will need its balance on offense to continue, as the Brewers saw four players finish Wednesday night's opener at Rutgers-Camden with five or more kills. Though young and inexperienced, Vassar's newcomers have shown the ability to get out and contribute right away. If that youth continues to play well, and setters
Annie MacMillan (Colorado Springs, CO/Coronado) and
Sophia Tiajoloff (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) run the offense well, Vassar College could be in for a good day Saturday.
A Look At The Nor'EastersThe University of New England is coming off an 11-16 season in 2014, going 4-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The young UNE squad, which doesn't have a senior on the team in 2015, posted the third-highest hitting percentage in the CCC a season ago. Also, defensively the Nor'Easters chalked up the second most solo blocks in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
UNE did lose leading attacker Leah Janelle this season, but the Nor'Easters bring back Grayson Szczepaniak to the squad for her junior campaign. The now captain finished with 232 kills a season ago, adding 59 total blocks and 111 digs. Sophomore Courtney Lambrese contributed 150 kills in 2014 along with a team-best 60 total rejections, and junior libero Nikki Mathewson paced the Nor'Easters with 323 total digs. The University of New England brings in four freshmen to this year's squad. Karol L'Heureux returns for her 36
th season on the bench for UNE, posting 672 career wins.
Against UNE All-TimeThe Brewers will take on the University of New England for the first time on Saturday.
A Look At The LightningThe Lightning of Lehman College were selected to finish third in the 2015 CUNYAC Preseason Poll after posting a 13-14 record during the 2014 campaign. Lehman started their season Tuesday evening with a come-from-behind win over Maritime College, as the Lightning rallied from two sets down to win in five games. Jo-Marie Aquino chalked up 21 kills for the Lightning, while Salviera Gonzalez added 14 in the win. Aquino also finished with a match-best 34 digs. LC played the entire match with just six players that got into the contest.
Aquino was voted as the preseason Player of the Year in the CUNYAC, but did not play last season for Lehman. Back in 2013, the now senior posted a team-high 333 kills to go with 259 digs. LC did lose its top two hitters from a year ago in Cari English and Julia Mercado, but Gonzalez was a weapon as well as she finished with 125 terminations and a .146 hitting percentage for the 2014 season. Head coach Elvis Rodriguez returns to the sidelines for his third season with LC, as he's help lead the Lightning to the CUNYAC semifinals during the past two seasons.
Against Lehman All-TimeVassar College has taken on Lehman just once in program history, earning a win over the Lightning back on October 2, 2004 in Poughkeepsie.
Fresh FacesThe Brewers started three newcomers in their season opener on Wednesday evening, as freshmen
Annie MacMillan and
Devan Gallagher (San Francisco, CA/Urban School of San Francisco) along with transfer
Bria Corham (Kansas City, MO/Montville Township) opened the match on the floor.
All-Around ActionJunior
Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) stuffed the stat sheet in many different categories Wednesday night, leading Vassar with seven kills, three service aces and two total blocks.
Dig It UpSenior libero
Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) continued her assault on the all-time digs record at Vassar. As of now, Hallum sits with 1541 digs in her career, as she chases the 2070 accumulated by Amanda Hsiung. With 29 matches on the regular season schedule remaining, Hallum needs to average 18.2 digs per match to set the mark.
Where'd Ya Go?The Brewers graduated 697 of their 1054 kills from a season ago, 66.1 percent of their total offense.
Gabby Miller is VC's leading returning attacker from 2014 with 155 terminations.
Let's Go BackThe Brewers have been a mainstay in the postseason Liberty League Tournament, having earning the conference title for seven consecutive seasons from 2000-06. Last year, VC missed the tournament for the first time in the last seven campaigns.
Home Sweet HomeVassar won seven of its 13 matches at home last year, but were best when playing in at a neutral setting, going 5-2 during the 2014 season.
Sea To Shining SeaVassar College has 13 players on this year's roster, with hometowns spread out all over the country. The team has representatives from nine different states, along with posting at least one player from all four time zones in the United States.
Up NextVassar will host Williams College Wednesday evening at 7:30 in a non-conference match with the Ephs in Kenyon Hall.
