POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 20, 2015) – The Vassar women's tennis team had a strong showing at the Vassar Scramble Tournament Sunday afternoon, finishing 6-0 in singles and 5-1 in doubles to wrap up the weekend. Overall the team went 12-8 in singles and 6-2 in doubles over the two-day tournament.
"This team continues to show improvement with each match played," said head coach Kathy Campbell. "This weekend in particular the team showed tremendous fight and mental toughness as well as the ability to make critical adjustments in match play. In the last two tournament weekends, team members have bolstered their experience in match play by playing about twelve matches each."
In the six singles wins on Sunday, two were in third set tiebreaks. Sophomore Morgan Fitzgerald (Encinitas, CA/Cal Coast Academy) won her first set 6-0, dropped the second set 3-6 and clinched the win 10-6 in the match tiebreak vs. Laura Tierney of New Paltz. Freshman Morgane Flournoy dropped the first set 5-7, won the second 6-4 and took the tiebreak 10-2 in her singles match against Madeline King of NYU. Sophomore Courtney Geiss won in two hard fought sets 7-6 (6) and 6-3. Kelsey Van Noy, Dasha Ivenitsky and Lauren Stauffer won their singles matches in two sets.
Kate Christensen and Morgan Fitzgerald went 2-0 in doubles on Sunday, downing a Connecticut College and New Paltz pair. Courtney Geiss and Morgane Flournoy also finished 2-0 in Sunday doubles, downing pairs from Connecticut College and New Paltz.
Vassar will now prep for the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament held next weekend on the campus of William Smith College.
