POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 19, 2015) – The Vassar women's tennis team was back in action today hosting New York University and Connecticut College at the Vassar Scramble Tournament. The two-day event features three rounds of singles play and three rounds of doubles competition. The Brewers had several successful showings on the first day of competition and head coach Kathy Campbell was happy to see how her team progressed throughout the day.
"I'm very pleased with our composure, positive approach and our fight," said Campbell. "We continue to improve with each match, and we're gaining confidence in our point construction and finishing shots. In singles Courtney Geiss and Morgane Flournoy had particularly strong performances as did the doubles pairs of Stauffer and Van Noy and Christensen and Fitzgerald. Dasha [Ivenitsky] really turned things around in her singles match after losing the first set to take a clear lead and win the second set eventually losing in match tiebreak. We'll be ready to go early tomorrow morning."
Seniors Lauren Stauffer and Kelsey Van Noy defeated Angelica Warren and Mariah Warren of Connecticut College 8-2 in the first round of doubles. Stauffer downed Jillian Brigandi of Connecticut College 6-2, 7-5 in the second round of singles, while Van Noy knocked off Catherine Rockett of Conn College 6-3, 6-1 in the first round.
Sophomore Morgan Fitzgerald downed Angelica Warren of Connecticut College 6-1, 6-2, while fellow sophomore Courtney Geiss earned a 4-6, 6-3, 10-1 decision over Emily Migliorni in round one. Freshman Kate Christensen downed Charlotte Marcoux of the Camels 6-4, 6-1, while freshman Morgane Flournoy bested Angelica Warren 6-7, 6-1, 10-8 in round two.
Vassar will return to Joss Courts tomorrow morning to wrap up play at the Vassar Scramble. First serve is scheduled for 8:00 am.
