WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (September 13, 2015) – The Vassar women's tennis team finished off its first competition weekend of the season at the Morehouse Invitational Sunday afternoon. The tournament is named in honor of former Eph tennis captain and standout Lindsay Morehouse '00, one of three Williams alumni/ae who died in New York City in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The tournament featured some of the highest profile teams in the nation, including the defending NCAA Champions Williams College. In addition to Vassar, Skidmore College, Middlebury College and Wesleyan University were all in attendance, with all five teams finishing inside the top-25 in the final ITA rankings last June.
"It was really positive to see our improvement from Saturday to Sunday," said head coach Kathy Campbell. "It was such a great, competitive environment, and I know this is going to be big for us moving forward this year."
Sophomores Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) and Morgan Fitzgerald (Encinitas, CA/Cal Coast Academy) finished undefeated in doubles on the weekend, blanking Korina Neveux and Charlotte Scott of Williams 8-0 in the pair's final match Sunday.
Senior Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy Sacred Heart) grinded out a tough three set victory over Skidmore Erica Meno Sunday. After going down 2-6 after the first, she rallied to win 7-5 in the second. She then picked up a 10-2 win in the decisive third pro set to claim the victory.
Campbell was pleased to see sophomore Courtney Geiss (Charleston, SC/Lauren Springs School) raise her level on Sunday, dropping a tough singles match to Helen Klass-Warch of Wesleyan 7-5, 7-5.
Vassar will be return to competition next weekend September 19-20 when the team hosts New York University , Connecticut College and SUNY-New Paltz at the Vassar Scramble.
