Day One Results
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (September 12, 2015) – The Vassar women's tennis team returned to competition today at the Morehouse Invitational hosted by Williams College. The tournament is named in honor of former Eph tennis captain and standout Lindsay Morehouse '00, one of three Williams alumni/ae who died in New York City in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The tournament features some of the highest profile teams in the nation, including the defending NCAA Champions Williams College. In addition to Vassar, Skidmore College, Middlebury College and Wesleyan University were all in attendance, with all five teams finishing inside the top-25 in the final ITA rankings last June.
"It was great to get such tough competition this early in the year," said head coach Kathy Campbell. "Our team was really tested throughout the day, but everyone is very upbeat and positive. This group is able to balance everything in terms of what they need to work on."
The Morehouse Invitational is a two-day flighted round robin event in both singles and doubles. The draw is set up as a round robin where the winners of each round are fed into play winners, and the losers of each round are fed into play other losers.
Sophomores Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) and Morgan Fitzgerald (Encinitas, CA/Cal Coast Academy) picked up a victory in the Greylock Doubles Bracket, topping Lauren Amos and Shannon Gibbs of Middlebury 8-5.
"Despite some missed opportunities in singles, we're playing with a lot of energy and positivity," said Campbell. "The team is thinking well out there, and even though these matches were challenging, they played very composed tennis. As the day went on we were starting some good things. I know we're all looking forward to day two."
Vassar will be back on the courts tomorrow to wrap up play at the tournament. Matches are slated to start at 9:00 am.
