GENEVA, NY (April 26, 2015) – The Vassar men's tennis team wrapped up the regular season in comeback fashion Sunday afternoon, rallying to top Hobart College 6-3 on the road. After initially going down 1-2 in doubles, the Brewers came through in singles play winning five of six to clinch the team victory.
The win solidifies Vassar (9-9, 5-2 Liberty League) as the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament May 2-3 at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, NY. VC will match up with the No. 2 seeded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the first round, while Hobart (10-8, 4-3 Liberty League) will face top-seeded Skidmore.
Sophomore Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep. School) and junior Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) kept Vassar alive in doubles, topping Michael Fields and Matt DePrima 8-4 in the No. 1 match. The visitors would trail 1-2 heading into singles, but swung the momentum back in their favor to secure the team victory.
Sophomore Juan Felipe Laso (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Ameican de Quito) grinded out a win in the lone three set match of the day, coming from behind to best Harry Nichols 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 at No. 5. Junior Jeffrey Gerwin (Fairfax, CA/Sir Francis Drake) picked up a crucial victory at No. 6, winning 6-4, 6-1 over Danny Kot.
Litsky clinched the match for the Brewers, winning his seventh straight bout at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1 over Michael Rusk. The win pushed Litsky to 7-0 in Liberty League singles play and 16-6 overall on the season.
Cooper and junior Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire) secured the final two wins for Vassar on the afternoon, as the team will now set its sights on the conference tournament next weekend.
