Vassar Tops Mt. St. Mary 17-8 to Win Third Straight

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 21, 2015) – Junior Isabelle Goldstein (Belmont, MA/Belmont) notched a game-high seven points on two goals and five assists, while seven other Brewers broke into the scoring column as Vassar cruised to a 17-8 victory over Mt. St. Mary (NY) College Tuesday evening. The Brewers never trailed in the game, outscoring the Knights in each half to post the team's second highest goal total of the year. The win moves VC to 8-5 in its final non-conference game of the year, while Mt. St. Mary drops to 7-8.

Freshman Storm Sideleau (Hopkinton, NH/Kimball Union Academy) continued to build upon her impressive rookie campaign, scoring a game-high four goals to tie for the team lead (20) this season. Sophomore Sydney Spadinger (Shelton, CT/Shelton) had one of her most productive games of the year, posting her first career hat trick while adding two draw controls. Senior Kate Pula (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) picked up the win in the net for VC, making seven stops while allowing just six goals.

After the Brewers raced out to a quick 3-0 lead in the opening minutes, Mt. St. Mary got on the board with a goal from Claire Duffy at the 25:06 mark. VC had the answer, scoring two of the next three goals to get ahead 5-2 with 19 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Knights made their most threatening run of the night shorty after, scoring two goals to cut the lead to one with 16:58 on the clock. Mt. St. Mary had several offensive possessions there after, but tight defense and goalkeeping kept the Knights out of the net.

The Brewers regained form in the final 10 minutes of the half, as Goldstein, Sideleau and freshman Hannah Cho (West Hartford, CT/Hall) all recorded goals to give the hosts an 8-4 edge at the break.

Both sides traded goals in the opening minutes of the second period, before Vassar put the game out of reach scoring six of the next seven goals. The Brewers went up 15-6 by the 12:10 mark, and were clinical to the finish as the team secured the 17-8 victory.

Claire Duffy had a team-high four points for the Knights, while goalkeeper Carly Lennon finished with six saves. VC held a 17-10 advantage in draw controls and outshot Mt. St. Mary 28-23.

Vassar will close out the regular season with two pivotal Liberty League contests this weekend, first facing St. Lawrence University (3-10, 1-6 LL) on Friday, April 24 on Weinberg Field. VC will play its final conference game against Clarkson University on April 25 as the team honors its eight seniors for senior day.

Notes:

Junior Isabelle Goldstein is now just one assist away from tying the Vassar season record in assists, posting her 28th of the season against Mt. St. Mary. Goldstein is just two away from passing Ali Fantl's ('07) season record of 29 assists.
