POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 18, 2015) – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute picked up two wins in doubles, then secured three singles victories to edge Vassar 5-4 Saturday afternoon. The Engineers, ranked No. 14 in the Northeast Region, improve to 11-3 on the season and 5-1 in the Liberty League with the win, while Vassar drops to 6-9 (2-2 Liberty).
Vassar went down early in doubles, as Sherman Uyeno and Graham Harris picked up an 8-3 win over sophomores Juan Felipe Laso (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio American De Quito) and Alexander Luckmann (Berkeley, CA/Head-Royce School) in the No. 3 match. Tristan Wise and Alain Gonzalez put the Engineers up 2-0, after sealing an 8-5 decision at No. 2 over juniors Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire Memorial) and Evan Udine (Delary Beach, FL/Boca Raton Community).
Sophomore Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep. School) and junior Daniel Cooper claimed the first victory for VC on the day, winning 8-3 over McKinley Grimes and Brandon Mazzara in the No. 1 match, as the Brewers trailed 2-1 heading into singles.
RPI clinched the match with three straight singles victories at No. 3, No. 6 and No. 4. Laso picked up a win at No. 5, besting Gonzalez 7-6, 6-2 at No. 5, while Cooper earned a 6-4, 7-5 decision over Mazzara in the No. 2 match.
Litsky was able to pick up the final win for VC on the day, topping Grimes 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1.
Vassar will be right back at it tomorrow morning at 10 am when the team hosts the Rochester Institute of Technology at Joss Courts.
