Brewers Ranked, Prepped for Seven Sisters Championships

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 10, 2015) - The Vassar women's tennis team will be back in action this weekend at the Seven Sisters Championships hosted by Smith College in Northampton, MA April 11-12.

ITA Division III Full Rankings
The Vassar women's tennis team moved up two spots in the in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Rankings released this week, now tabbed as the No. 22 team in the country. VC also improved upon its ranking in the Northeast Region, moving up from No. 10 to the No. 9 spot in the rankings. Freshman Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) is ranked as the No. 11 singles player in the region, moving up one spot from the March 26 rankings.

Last Time Out
No. 24 Vassar picked up its second straight Liberty League dual match victory Saturday afternoon, besting William Smith College 8-1 on the road. Vassar swept doubles for the second straight match, then picked up five more singles victories to seal the win.

At Last Year's Event
Vassar went 3-1 at last year's championship, extending a season-best eight match winning streak with wins over Mount Holyoke, Smith and Bryn Mawr. That streak would come to and end with the final match of the weekend, as the Brewers dropped a tight contest to then-No. 28 Wellesley 2-3. Shayna Becker and Winnie Yeates were named to the 2014 Seven Sisters All-Tournament Team, as Becker went undefeated in doubles and Yeates finished 4-0 in singles play.

A Look at the Lyons
Mount Holyoke has had a solid season in 2014-15, currently standing four games above .500 heading into the weekend. The Lyons finished in the middle of the pack in the NEWMAC, going 4-4 in conference play back in the fall. Mount Holyoke will wrap up its regular season on Saturday, April 18 when the team hosts Roger Williams University.

Junior Margaux Holloschultz has been the team's primary player at No. 1 singles, going 7-10 in dual matches and 7-13 overall on the season. Holloschultz has teamed up with freshman Ishita Tibrewal to play the bulk of No. 1 doubles matches for the Lyons, holding a 10-6 record as a pair in duals this season.

The Brewers earned a 5-0 victory over Mount Holyoke at last year's Seven Sisters Championship, which included a singles sweep from Samantha Schapiro, Emily Hallewell and Winnie Yeates.

A Look at the Pioneers
Smith had a rough go at the fall season, finishing seventh in the NEWMAC with a conference record of 2-6. The pioneers have had more success in this spring, going 3-3 since February and coming off a 5-4 victory over Colby-Sawyer on April 3. Smith has two more matches scheduled for the regular season, facing Roger Williams and Nichols on back-to-back days April 18-19.

Sophomore Kelli Cheung and senior Jordan Dublin have combined to go 2-12 at No. 1 singles for the Pioneers, while sophomore Margaret Anne Smith holds a team-best 10-4 record in singles action. Smith has used several different combinations for doubles, and is 12-30 overall this season in paired play.

Previous Meeting
Vassar rolled past the Pioneers last season at the Seven Sisters Championships, clinching a 5-0 victory in the team's second match of the weekend. The Brewers earned six, 6-0 victories at singles to win in straight sets.

A Look at the Owls
Bryn Mawr has played a relatively light schedule up to this point in the season, currently standing 1-4 on the year and 0-3 in the Centennial Conference. The Owls picked up their first win of the spring on Monday, April 6 with a 8-1 decision over Albright and have had three matches postponed since March.

The Brewers downed Bryn Mawr 5-0 at last year's event, as Samantha Schapiro, Winnie Yeates and Connie Yoo all clinched singles victories.

A Look at the Blue
Wellesley is currently the No. 27 ranked team in the nation and 11th ranked team in the Northeast region heading into the weekend, and the defending Seven Sisters Champion. The Blue are currently 10-5 in dual matches this season, and are 2-2 in the team's four matches played this spring.

Senior Sojung Lee returns as the top singles player for Wellesley, ranked T-25th in the northeast while holding a 6-5 record on the year at No. 1 singles. Lee has teamed up with sophomore Carina Chen at No. 1 doubles, and the pair has gone 8-4 as the 13th ranked team in the Northeast. Freshman Caroline Hsu and sophomore Andjela Stojkovic have been solid at the No. 2 spot for the Blue, going 9-1 overall as a pair this season.

Previous Meeting
Wellesley edged Vassar 3-2 in the final match of last year's Seven Sisters Championship, as the team's split doubles and Wellesley took two of three at singles.

Conference Honors Sweep
The Vassar women's tennis team swept the Liberty League Team of the Week awards announced on Monday after winning two Liberty League matches against RPI and William Smith.

Liberty League Shaping Up
Heading down the stretch of the season, the Liberty League playoff picture for women's tennis has begun to take shape. Skidmore has locked up the No. 1 overall seed with a 6-0 conference record and one Liberty dual match remaining. The Thoroughbreds hold the tiebreak over Vassar with a the head-to-head victory in the event both teams shared 6-1 records.

At 4-1, Vassar is in prime position to clinch a spot in the playoffs next weekend when the Brewers face RIT on April 19. A win would put the Brewers one step closer to securing the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, which will be held at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, NY May 2-3.

Vassar will play its final non-conference dual match of the season on Saturday, April 18 when the Brewers travel to face the 13th ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 1:30 pm.
