POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 6, 2015) – The Vassar's women's tennis team swept Liberty League Team of the Week Honors, while senior Jackie Palma (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset Junior-Senior) of the Brewer women's lacrosse team was named the conference's Defender of the Week in a release made by the conference offices this afternoon.
Palma earned her second career nod as the Liberty League's Defensive Performer of the Week after another solid weekend anchoring the Brewer defense. Palma notched four caused turnovers, four ground balls and a draw control to help VC to a 1-1 weekend in Liberty League action. She helped keep RPI scoreless in OT while notching her first goal of the year to power VC to an 11-8 victory over the Engineers; the first Liberty League loss for RPI since 2013. Palma currently ranks first in the Liberty League and ninth in the country in caused turnovers per game (3.00).
Seniors Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) and Ava Sadeghi (Glendale, CA/Campbell Hall) were named the conference's Doubles Team of the Week for a league-leading seventh time today, coming off another 2-0 week as a pair. Schapiro and Sadeghi earned wins over Emily Laurilliard and Melanie Frank of RPI and Haley Wolf and Hannah More of William Smith at No. 1 doubles to help VC go 2-0 in Liberty League dual match action.
Freshman Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) was named the Liberty League Singles Player of the Week for a league-best fifth time today, after going 2-0 at No. 1 singles. She earned two set victories over Casey Olsen of RPI and Hannah More of William Smith to remain a perfect 5-0 in Liberty League singles matches.
Fellow freshman Morgan Fitzgerald (Encinitas, CA/Cal Coast Academy) completed the award sweep for Vassar women's tennis, earning her first selection as the Liberty League Rookie of the Week. Fitzgerald went undefeated at both singles and doubles the past week, picking up two wins at the No. 3 doubles spot against RPI and William Smith. She also earned wins over Pooja Ganesh (RPI) and Annie Venditti (WS) for her first career Liberty singles wins.
Senior Heather Ingraham (Cromwell, CT/Cromwell) was named to the Honor Roll for women's track as her strong start to the season continued at the Ramapo Roadrunner Invitational Saturday. Ingraham started Saturday by helping the 4x100 meter relay team win their heat with a time of 50.90. Ingraham would later compete in the 100 meter dash, posting the second-fastest time in prelims with a 12.37, which broke the previous school record of 12.55. Ingraham finished third in the finals later in the afternoon. The senior then finished her day by taking second in the 200 with a time of 25.56, helping post her second ECAC qualifying time of the afternoon. The senior now has the 38th fastest time nationally in the 100, 19th in the 200, and top time in the 400, while boasting the 7th fastest time in NCAA Division III in the 800 this year.
