Vassar Men's Volleyball Sweeps Endicott 3-0

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 13, 2015) - Led by freshman Matthew Knigge's (New Egypt, NJ, New Egypt) 11 kills and career-high .883 attack percentage, the Brewers (12-10) cruised past Endicott College (9-10) for their 12th win of the season. The Brewers outscored the Gulls 25-18, 25-19, 30-28 in the straight-set victory.

The first set began as a back-and-forth affair, and the Brewers found themselves trailing 9-10 early on before a Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA, Parkland) kill sparked an 11-3 run. The Brewers went on to win comfortably, 25-18, with junior Erik Halberg (Newark, DE, Salesianum School) putting an exclamation point on the set by closing it out with an ace. The second set proved very similar to the first, though it took the Brewers a bit longer to crack the Gulls the second time around. Down 16-17, the Brewers surged ahead with a 9-2 run to take the second set 25-19.

The Gulls fought even harder in the third set, but were unable to prevent the sweep as the Brewers won the set 30-28. The Brewers were up 23-21 after a Kriz service ace, but Endicott pushed back and tied the set at 24-24. Endicott would tie the game four more times in the third set, but was unable to regain the lead.

In addition to his team-high 11 kills, Knigge tied for a team-high with three blocks and had a team-high three aces for the Brewers, who had nine total aces on the day. The Brewers held the Gulls to a .130 attack percentage for the match, including a -.043 rate in the first set and a .040 percentage in the second set.

The Brewers will face MIT tomorrow at 1pm in Cambridge, MA in what is sure to be an exciting UVC clash.
