Brewer Men's Squash Wins Thriller Over Bard, 6-3

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY (February 8, 2015) -- The Vassar College men's squash team won the bottom five spots against rival Bard College Sunday, three coming in five sets as the Brewers topped the Raptors 6-3 in play from the Stevenson Athletic Center Squash Courts.

The win for the Brewers avenged their first loss in program history to Bard last weekend, when the Raptors earned the Hudson Valley Team Tournament title with a 5-4 win. Sophomore Vincent Mencotti (Birmingham, MI/Brother Rice) upped his win streak to four matches Sunday, defeating John Levering 11-9, 11-7 and 11-5.

Bard College picked up the next three positions in the ladder, but the bottom of the lineup for Vassar stepped up when it mattered. Senior David Garfinkel (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) chalked up his third consecutive win at No. 5, as he rallied from being down a game to earn a 11-6, 9-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-6 victory,

Junior Ben Kurchin (Rochester, NY/Harley School) had no problems in defeating Vik Joshi 11-8, 11-5 and 11-3, while Tim Boycott (Mbabane, Swaziland/Waterford Kamhlaba UWCSA) snapped a six-match skid with a 11-8, 11-1 and 11-5 victory at No. 8.

Senior Noah Kulick (Cambridge, MA/Beaver Country Day) also picked up a huge win at No. 7, as he won all the odd games in a five-set win with scores of 13-11, 7-11, 11-3, 9-11 and 11-3. The most thrilling match of the day might have come at No. 9, as Samuel Hammer (Wethersfield, CT/Kingswood Oxford) won his second straight match and third of the season.

In that contest, Hammer fell behind to Bard's Satwik Srikrishnan 2-0, dropping the first two sets 11-4 and 11-6. Undeterred, the sophomore showed some fight by rallying with an 11-9 win in the third set. Hammer deadlocked the match at two sets apiece with an 11-5 victory in the fourth game, and completed the comeback with an 11-8 win in the fifth.

With the win, the Brewers clinched the season series with the Raptors, and moved to 31-1 all-time against Bard. Vassar will finish its season as a team February 20-22 at the College Squash Association Team Championships, hosted by Trinity College in West Hartford, CT.
