PAXTON, MA (February 7, 2015) – The Vassar men's tennis team opened its 2015 spring season with a 5-0 dual match victory over Clark University Saturday evening at the Paxton Sports Centre. The Brewers swept the doubles matches to start, then earned two singles victories to clinch the team win. VC moves to 3-1 on the year in duals with the victory, while Clark drops to 2-4.
Junior Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, Ca/Piedmont) and sophomore Alexander Luckmann (Berkeley, CA/Head-Royce School) notched the first victory of the day for Vassar earning an 8-5 win over Dan Stein and Zack Goodstein at No. 1 doubles. Junior Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire Memorial) and sophomore Juan Felipe Laso (Quito, Ecudaor/Colegio American de Quito) were also victorious at No. 2 doubles, earning a 8-6 decision over Spencer Pinkney and Fernando Pinoargote.
Down 2-7 in the No. 3 doubles match, sophomore Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep. School) and senior William Zhu (San Francisco, CA/Lowell) battled all the way back to earn a 9-7 win over Josh Burger and Joel Simonson to clinch the 3-0 sweep for VC.
The Brewers picked up two singles victories to earn the team decision, with the first coming on a 6-2, 6-1 win from Cooper over Pickney in the No. 2 match. Laso sealed the win in the No. 4 matchup, downing Goodstein 6-3, 6-1 to give VC the shutout win.
The Vassar men's tennis team will return to competition next Saturday, February 14 to face TCNJ on the road in Ewing Township, NJ at 1:00 pm.
