Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY (February 21, 2015) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team finished play at the Bard College Tournament Saturday, earning the runner-up spot after going 3-0 on the weekend with a three-set win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent this afternoon.
The Brewers and Rutgers-Newark each posted 3-0 records on the weekend, but the Scarlet Knights earned the tournament title due to the point's tiebreaker. Vassar College earned two members on the All-Tournament Team, as junior
Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) and freshman
Matthew Knigge (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) each were tabbed with the accolade.
Vassar College went undefeated at Bard thanks to another solid hitting performance, posting an attacking rate of .341 against the Dolphins (6-4) in a 25-14, 25-14 and 25-20 win. In the opening set, the Brewers scored the first four points and led by as many as 13 during the game to cruise to the early lead. Kriz was great down the stretch in the opening set, as he tallied the final three points for VC on kills.
The second set was much of the same, as the Brewers registered 10 of the first 12 points in the middle frame. Vassar led by as many as 11 in the second set, and breezed to a two-game lead. In the final period, Mount Saint Vincent took a three-point lead at 9-6 but Vassar rallied to tie the score at nine.
With the score deadlocked at 14, the Brewers earned the next seven points, capped by an ace by
Christian Lizana (Dublin, PA/Pennridge). The Dolphins trimmed the VC advantage to 24-20, but junior
Erik Halberg (Newark, DE/Salesianum School) ended the match with a kill. Knigge led the Brewers Saturday with nine kills on 15 swings, adding five aces and three blocks.
Kriz finished with eight kills and five digs, while sophomore
Quinn Rutledge (Chesterfield, VA/Cosby) added eight terminations and nine defensive saves as well. Senior captain
Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Milton Area) dealt out 21 assists, while fellow setter
Zechariah Lee (Santa Clarita, CA/Saugus) registered 11 helpers and three aces. Lizana posted four kills, five digs and two aces as well for VC, which posted just 11 errors all match and chalked up 12 total service finishes.
Marc Barreda led CMSV with nine kills Saturday, while Tyler Cucullu finished with four kills, five digs and four blocks in earning All-Tournament Team.
The Brewers return to action next Friday evening, battling No. 10 Baruch College in New York City at 5 p.m. in non-conference action.
