Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second Half Surge Pushes Vassar Men Past Maritime, 68-61

THROGGS NECK, NY (November 24, 2015) – The Vassar College men's basketball team outscored host Maritime College (NY) by 12 points in the second half, chalking up a nice 68-61 road victory in non-league play from Riesenberg Hall Gym Tuesday evening.

The Brewers shot the ball well in the first half, to the tune of 46.2 percent (12-26) while connecting on 4-of-8 from three-point land. Unfortunately for Vassar, the Privateers (0-4) were even better from the floor. The hosts made 15 of their 27 field goals in the opening stanza, taking their biggest lead of the game at 25-18 after a layup by Patrick MacDonald.

Undeterred, the Vassar men scored the next seven points to deadlock the game at 25. Freshman Paul Grinde (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry Collegiate) tallied four points during the mini-spurt, while senior Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) nailed a triple during the run. With the game tied at 28, Maritime chalked up six of the final seven points of the period to take a 34-29 lead into the break.

After halftime, VC ratcheted up the defense on the Privateers, allowing the precision offense of VC to go to work. Vassar shot 48.1 percent from the floor in the closing half, while holding Maritime to just eight field goals over the final period.

The Brewers took their first lead since 14-11 with 15:00 minutes to go in the game on a three from sophomore Tony Caletti (Mil Valley, CA/Branson). The Privateers wouldn't go away though, pushing back ahead by five points with 8:21 left in the game after a pair of free throws by James Bonner. The squads traded leads over the next few minutes before Maritime chalked up their final field goal of the game at 3:08 left in regulation to take a three-point lead at 58-55.

Vassar would clamp down from that point on, regaining the lead with 2:06 to play on a layup by Jesse Browne (Barrington, RI/Deerfield Academy). The Brewers forced Maritime into two turnovers and 0-of-4 shooting down the stretch, while hitting nine of their 10 free throws to pull out the come-from-behind victory.

VC put three players in double-figures, paced by the 19 points from Wasyl, who was 7-of-12 from the floor Tuesday. Brown added 15 points, Grinde chalked up 14 points, and junior wing player Mickey Adams (Boston, MA/St. Sebastian's School) dominated the glass with a game and career-best 13 rebounds. His previous career-high on the glass was six coming into the night.

Freshman Alex Seff (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) came off the bench to post six points, four rebounds and two assists in 16 minutes for VC, which connected on 47.2 percent (25-53) from the field. Vassar also won the rebounding battle, 32-27.
MacDonald finished with 17 points to pace the Privateers, while John Liccese and Isaiah Hayes posted 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Vassar returns to the floor December 2 at 7 p.m. in Hartford, CT, taking on Trinity College (CT) in another non-conference road test.
