POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 3, 2015) – The Vassar men's tennis team secured a pair of shutout dual match victories over Union College and Bard College in the squad's final day of fall competition Saturday evening. The Brewers move to 2-2 on the year and 2-0 in the Liberty League, while Union falls to 1-1 (1-1 LL) and Bard drops to 1-2 (0-2 LL).
"It was great for us to walk away with two conference wins today," said head coach Alex Wong. "Playing doubleheaders is never easy, but the guys stayed focused and played well throughout the day. Obviously we are even more thrilled that we won all of our matches, which shows great depth. Everybody had to contribute so it truly was a team effort today."
Match 1 Results – Vassar 9, Union 0
VC picked up its first win of the day at Walker Field House with a 9-0 dual match victory over Union. Junior Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep. School) was perfect at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Anthony Laurencio to clinch the match.
Senior Jeffrey Gerwin (Fairfax, CA/Sir Francis Drake) grinded out a three-set victory at No. 6 to seal the shutout, winning 4-6, 7-5, 10-4 over David Brown.
Match 2 Results – Vassar 9, Bard 0
The Brewers carried the momentum from the Union match into their second dual of the day, downing Bard 9-0 to wrap up the day. Vassar was perfect against the Raptors, not surrendering a single set to complete the sweep.
Freshman Nick Lee (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) earned his first collegiate win at No. 5, besting Wejnert-Depue 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Nick Zuczek (Westerly, RI/Saint Bernard) also notched his first career singles victory in the burgundy and gray, knocking off Satchel Fisher 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4.
Litsky and junior Juan Felipe Laso (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio American de Quito) were both perfect at No. 1 and No. 2, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Ted Laport and Max Meying (respectively).
Vassar's doubles teams of Cooper/Zuczek and Udine/Luckmann both finished undefeated on the day.
Vassar will be back in action in February when the squad begins its spring season.
