Links: (Union Soccer Home Page) (Roster) (Stats) (Schedule)
Site: Schenectady, NY
Facility: College Park Field
Date: October 28, 2015
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Game Coverage: (Live Stats)

Last Time Out: Senior Tom Wiechert (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 81st minute to lead the Vassar College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at East Campus Stadium on October 24.

A Look at the Dutchmen: The Dutchmen will also be fighting for their playoff lives on Wednesday, as the team still has an outside chance to finish inside the top four in the Liberty League. Union (9-2-4, 2-1-3 LL) kept its season alive with a 1-0 win over RIT on October 24, but will need to win its final two games vs. Vassar and Skidmore (10/31) to stay in the running. The Dutchmen got off to a quality start in 2015, going 6-1-2 in the month of September. The squad has been hot and cold down the stretch of Liberty League play, holding a 3-1-2 mark since that point.

The Dutchmen are led offensively by senior Carl Faber, who has netted a team-high 10 goals this season. Sophomore Ethan Strauss has also been a solid contributor for Union, posting six goals and one assist for 13 points on the season. Sophomore John Weitzman has seen the bulk of the minutes in the goal for the Dutchmen, making 11 starts while holding a 0.818 save percentage and 0.79 goals against average.

Against Union All-Time: Vassar is 10-14-4 all-time against Union, but has had the Dutchmen's number in recent years holding a 4-0-1 edge since the 2011 season. Last year VC clinched a playoff spot with a 1-0 victory over Union on October 29 on a goal from then-freshman Alex Gonzales.

Around the League: St. Lawrence (5-2) jumped into the No. 1 spot in the conference after defeating Skidmore 1-0 on October 24. The Saints will clinch the top seed in the playoffs with a win over Clarkson on October 31. Hobart (4-1-2) and RIT (4-3) are both inside the top four currently, but the teams will both play each other on October 31. Vassar could still finish as high as second in the conference with two more wins and some help from around the league. Here's a look at the current Liberty League Standings.

Postseason Push: Vassar will virtually need to win out its remaining Liberty League games to have a shot at the conference playoffs this season. Five wins will be enough to advance, but a loss or a tie will pretty much end the team's postseason aspirations.

Elimination Game: Wednesday's game will have a playoff atmosphere, as the losing team will virtually be eliminated from playoff contention.

Winning Season: With a win over Union, Vassar will clinch its seventh consecutive winning season. The Brewers have recorded 17 winning seasons under head coach Andy Jennings.

30 Club: Senior Tom Wiechert (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) made history against St. Lawrence, becoming just the third player is program history to amass 30 career goals as a Brewer. His goal against RPI put him at 32 career goals and 72 career points, which ranks third and tied for third (respectively) in school history. Wiechert leads the team in points (17) on seven goals and three assists.

Game-Winners: Wiechert also moved into a tie with Joseph Petruccelli (2000-03) for second all-time in career game-winning goals with his eighth as a Brewer vs. RPI. One more game-winner will move him into a tie for first.

Firsts of the Season: A first half header goal from sophomore Alex Gonzales (Aliso Viejo, CA/Mater Dei) was the first of the season for the midfielder, and it came in a huge moment to help the Brewers overtake RPI. Senior Ben Glasner (Trumansburg, NY/Charles O Dickerson) played in a beautiful ball for the assist, which was also his first of the year.

Plus-Three: Last season, no single player scored more than three goals for the Brewers. Wiechert, Cosmo Veneziale (Garden City, NY/Garden City) and Jordan Palmer have already amassed at least four goals each in seven games in 2015, while Tyler Gilmore has three in 13 games played.

Starters x 5: Five Brewers have started in all 14 games for Vassar this season including Tom Wiechert, Jordan Palmer, Nick Hess, Hayden Van Brewer (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) and Ben Glasner.

Next Up: Vassar will play its regular season finale on Halloween this Saturday, October 31 at home on Gordon Field. The Vassar men's soccer team will honor its nine seniors in a pregame ceremony for senior day. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 am.
