A Look at the Statesmen: Hobart enters the weekend 8-2-2 overall and is currently receiving votes in the latest
NSCAA National Poll released on October 13. The Statesmen are 1-1-2 in the conference, and are coming off a 1-0 win over St. Lawrence on October 10. The Hobart defense has been tough to crack as of late, as the Statesmen have allowed just one goal since September 19. The squad will look to return to the Liberty League playoffs after qualifying as the No. 4 seed a season ago.
Hobart currently has three players tied for a team-high in goals scored (3) with no player accounting for more than seven points on the season. Senior Tyler Serafine has started all 12 games in goal for the Statesmen, and holds a 0.48 goals against average and .833 save percentage.
Against Hobart All-Time: Vassar is 4-9-2 all-time vs. Hobart since the series started in 2000, but has had the upper hand in recent years. The Brewers are 3-1-1 against the Statesmen since 2010, and picked up a 2-0 win last season when the teams met on October 4.
A Look at the Tigers: RIT has had an up-and-down season thus far in 2015, but is coming off a critical 2-1 win over Clarkson on October 10. The victory helps keep the Tigers (5-7, 2-2 LL) afloat in the Liberty League playoff race, and the team will have an opportunity to pick up a win over Bard Friday afternoon before facing the Brewers on October 17. The Tigers are currently being outscored 19-14 on the season and are 3-3 in home games coming into the weekend.
Freshman Gene Sicoli has been one of the most dangerous players in the conference so far this season, as he is tied for third in the Liberty League in points (18) on seven goals and four assists. He has accounted for 50% of RIT's scoring this season, and will be a key player for VC to look out for on the defensive end. RIT has turned to fellow freshman Peter Cinibulk to start in the cage the past three games, and he currently holds a 0.81 goals against average and .844 save percentage in 554 minutes of action this season.
13 Allowed: Vassar has allowed 13 goals this season, matching its total allowed by October 13 of last season. VC went on to finish 5-2-1 in the Liberty League and make its fourth consecutive league playoff appearance.
Away from Home: Vassar has played just three true road games this season, and is 2-1 in those contests thus far. The Brewers will have a similar feel to Gordon Field this weekend, playing back-to-back games on natural grass surfaces.
Corner Advantage: VC has done well to generate scoring chances off of corner kicks this seasons, and holds a 64-32 advantage on opponents this season. Only two teams have generated more corner kicks in games against Vassar this season.
Around the League: Skidmore remains the only unbeaten team left in the Liberty League, sitting atop the conference at 4-0. Vassar occupies the No. 2 spot with a 2-1 league record, followed by St. Lawrence (2-2) and RIT (2-2).
Here's a look at the current Liberty League Standings. 30 Club: Senior
Tom Wiechert (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) made history against St. Lawrence, becoming just the third player is program history to amass 30 career goals as a Brewer. His goal against Clarkson put him at 31 career goals and 70 career points, which ranks third and fourth (respectively) in school history. Wiechert leads the team in points (15) on six goals and three assists.
Rookie of the Week: Freshman
Tyler Gilmore (Coronado, CA/Coronado) was named as the Liberty League Rookie of the Week for the first time in his career on October 5. Gilmore had a great weekend in the backline for Vassar, helping the Brewers shutout No. 16 St. Lawrence on October 2. Gilmore then notched his third goal of the season in a 3-1 win over Clarkson, heading home the equalizer in the first half.
Remember September: Vassar compiled a 4-2-2 mark in the month of September this year. Over the past five seasons (including 2015), the Brewers have posted a mark of 26-14-6 in games played in September.
Winner Winner: Jordan Palmer (Woodland Hills, CA/Agoura) scored his second game-winning goal of the season vs. New-Paltz, bringing his career total to six all-time in the burgundy and gray.
Tom Wiechert's game-winner vs. St. Lawrence was the seventh of his career, putting him into a tie for fourth all-time with Juliano Pereira ('14) and current assistant coach
Ross Macklin ('12).
Season Low: The Vassar defense was a force to be reckoned with on September 19 allowing a season-low two shots to New Paltz. It was the least amount of shots allowed from an opponent since the Brewers surrendered two shots to Maritime College on August 29, 2014.
Two Ties: Vassar has already matched its total for draws from 2014, tying Salve Regina (2-2) and SUNY-Oneonta (1-1) through the first few weeks of the season. Vassar's most ties ever in a season came in 2015, when the team finished with five draws.
Bounce Back: Vassar is 7-1-3 over the past two seasons in games directly following a loss.
Plus-Three: Last season, no single player scored more than three goals for the Brewers. Wiechert, and
Cosmo Veneziale (Garden City, NY/Garden City) and Palmer have already amassed at least four goals each in seven games in 2015, while Gilmore has three in nine games played.
Starters x 5: Five Brewers have started in all 11 games for Vassar this season including
Tom Wiechert,
Jordan Palmer,
Nick Hess,
Hayden Van Brewer (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) and
Ben Glasner (Trumansburg, NY/Charles O Dickerson).
Next Up: Vassar will return to action next Saturday, October 24 when the team travels to Troy, NY to battle the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 2:00 pm.
