Vassar Women’s Squash Earns Hudson Valley Team Invitational Title

Box Score vs. Fordham | Box Score vs. Rochester

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 31, 2015) – The Vassar College women's squash team celebrated Senior Day in style Saturday afternoon, taking the Hudson Valley Team Invitational team title of the event it hosted in Kenyon Hall.

The Brewers (5-4) opened the day with a 9-0 win over Fordham University, claiming the title for the Invite with an 8-1 win over the University of Rochester later in the afternoon. It was the first win of the Hudson Valley Team Tournament for the women since taking the title of the event back in 2009 with wins over Connecticut College, Wesleyan University and Columbia University.

In the first match of the day the Brewers had no problem rolling to a 9-0 win, as none of the seven players for Vassar dropped a game. Freshman Hannah Nice (Hanover, NH/Hanover) picked up an easy 11-2, 11-1 and 11-1 win at No. 1 for her eighth triumph of the season, and sophomore Isabelle Bertram (Salt Lake City, UT/West) outscored her opponent 33-7 in her No. 2 match.

Vassar College started up 2-0 against the Rams, earning No. 8 and No. 9 by default, and the No. 3 through No. 7 spots surrendered just 40 total points in five matches. Prior to the night match with Rochester, Vassar's two seniors of Roxanne Ringer (Ridgefield, CT/Home School) and Ellie Opdahl (Tokyo, Japan/Cate School) were honored for their hard work this season.

Against the Yellowjackets, Nice rolled in straight sets to move to 8-1 at the No. 1 spot this season, while Bertram and Carly Scher (Penn Valley, PA/Herriton) followed suit with three set victories. Scher allowed just two total points in her win against Rochester, while Cherylann Mucciolo (Shohola, PA/Blair Academy) picked up her second win of the day with an 11-5, 11-4 and 11-5 win at No. 4.

The senior tandem of Opdahl and Ringer each doubled their win total for the day, with Opdahl chalking up an 11-7, 11-5 and 11-6 victory at No. 5, with Ringer earning a No. 6 win with scores of 11-4, 11-7 and 11-5. Ringer and Opdahl each moved into a tie for second place on the team in victories this season with seven, tying Mucciolo and Steph Zhu (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro).

Zhu had a thriller in her final match of the afternoon, falling behind 2-1 after three sets. Zhu snuck by Apoline Jungels 12-10 in the fourth set and clinched the match with an 11-7 win in the fifth game. Rochester's only win came at No. 9, as Molly Ostriker earned a three-set win over Nancy Qi (Beijing, China/Beijing National Day).

The Vassar College women's team is back in action at Harvard University Saturday afternoon, battling in the Seven Sisters Championships, starting at 11 a.m. in Cambridge, MA.
