Women’s Volleyball Splits Pair Of Five Setters In VC Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 5, 2014) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team hosted day one of the 2014 Vassar College Invitational Friday evening, splitting its pair of matches with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the College of Mount Saint Vincent.

The Brewers fell to the Engineers in the early match in five games with scores of 23-25, 25-9, 27-29, 25-19 and 15-9. Vassar then rallied from a pair down in the day's finale to earn a 14-25, 19-25, 25-14, 25-14, 15-5 victory in the nightcap.

The Brewers took a set lead on the Engineers in the opening stanza of the match, building a large lead and holding on for a two-point win, as freshman Alex Sams (Los Angeles, CA/Beverly Hills) posted a kill for the final point. MIT (5-1) came back with an emphatic game two win, but Vassar responded with a thrilling third set win.

In the third period, Vassar led by as much as five points in the early going, but the Engineers came back to tie the match at 16 following a 6-2 run. The set would be tied eight times near the end, including at 24 after Vassar got a pair of kills from Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucys Priory) to tie the match. VC would move a set up thanks to a game-clinching kill from Taylor Mosley (Rowlett, TX/Parish Episcopal School).

The fourth set was again all MIT, and Vassar struggled offensively with eight errors in the final set as the Engineers pulled out the win. Mosley and fellow senior Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco) each finished with team-highs of 12 kills, while Pitre added eight kills and seven digs.

Freshman setter Sophia Tiajoloff (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) finished with 34 helpers and seven digs, and Chloe Hallum (Baltimore, MD/Olympia) chalked up a game-high 23 digs for Vassar. For Hallum, it was third consecutive match with more than 20 digs. VC struggled with serve receive at times in, committing 11 service errors.

Despite dropping the first two sets to the Dolphins (0-2), the Brewers came back with a vengeance and earned their second victory of the season. Down two sets to none, Vassar posted a huge hitting percentage of .429 in the third set, erring just twice on 28 swings to get back into the match.

In the fourth set, Vassar again was hot at the net, hitting .350 on 20 swings while holding CMSV to negative offensive numbers in tying the match at two games. In the final set, VC jumped out to an 8-2 lead and never looked back in earning the win. Over the last three games, Vassar committed just four errors and posted 29 kills over 64 attempts.

Mosley had a team-best 11 kills, marking her fourth straight match with 10 or more finishes. Sophomore Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) finished just on kill short of a triple double, but still filled the stat sheets with 17 assists, 10 digs, nine kills, five aces and two blocks.

Sams added seven kills for Vassar, and Paige Lerman (San Rafael, CA/Jewish Comm. Of The Bay) tallied eight terminations, four digs and three blocks. Hallum chalked up 21 more digs, and Tiajoloff finished with a team-high 20 assists and six digs as well.

The Brewers were solid with the serve in the nightcap, posting 17 service aces, led by the five from Miller, while Tiajoloff chalked up four and Hallum and Sierra Tobin (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) each posted three apiece.
Vassar hit .174 (44-21-132) in the match, and held the Dolphins to a .063 clip from the floor on Friday evening.

Vassar College returns to the floor Saturday morning, taking on Ramapo College and New Paltz in day two of the Vassar Invitational. VC battles RC at 11 a.m., before taking on the Hawks in the final match of the day at 3 p.m. in the AFC.

In other Friday evening action, New Paltz rallied to beat MIT in five games, while also knocking off Ramapo in straight sets. Ramapo also defeated Mount Saint Vincent in four games, as three teams (MIT, Vassar and Ramapo) are 1-1, with New Paltz sitting atop the standings at 2-0.
