Women’s Volleyball Tripped Up In Four Sets Wednesday at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (September 10, 2014) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to hosting Williams College take the third set, but couldn't send the game the distance in falling 3-1 Wednesday in non-conference play from Chandler Gym.

The Ephs (3-0) came into Wednesday's contest ranked No. 27 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Poll, which was released Tuesday morning. Williams looked the part in the first two sets, taking the opening pair of frames 25-13 and 25-12.

The Brewers fought back to send the match to a fourth set after earning a 27-25 victory in the third set. Vassar held the host Ephs to .049 hitting in the third period, forcing the hosts into 12 attacking errors.

Vassar (2-5) led the fourth set until the midway point when Williams pushed ahead, capturing the match with a 25-21 win in the clinching game. In that final set, VC actually hit its best percentage of the match at .158, but Williams College was able to finish 15 attacks in earning the win.

Sophomore Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) led the Brewers in the statistics category on Wednesday evening, as she posted seven kills, 10 digs and three assisted blocks. Senior outside Taylor Mosley (Rowlett, TX/Parish Episcopal School) added seven kills as well, while freshman setter Sophia Tiajoloff (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) chalked up 20 assists, nine digs, four total blocks and two aces.

Freshman hitter Paige Lerman (San Rafael, CA/Jewish Comm. Of The Bay) played in all four games, powering down three of her four attacks on the night, while junior libero Chloe Hallum (Baltimore, MD/Olympia (WA)) continued to rack up the digs with 18 more Wednesday. The Brewers hit at a .086 (26-16-116) clip on the night and had a season-best 10 total blocks.

Katherine Lane and her 16 kills paced Williams, while Tori Jasuta followed up with eight kills and 14 digs. Catherine Egan also had nine kills and Ryan Farley dished out 40 assists to go with 14 digs for the Ephs. WC connected on 19.7 percent of its attacks, and posted 64 digs to just the 46 from Vassar.

The Brewers are back in action this upcoming weekend, hosting the annual Seven Sisters Tournament with Bryn Mawr College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College and Wellesley College. Action starts Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in the Athletics & Fitness Center.
