Veneziale Goal Lifts Vassar Over Manhattanville, 1-0

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 10, 2014) – Junior Cosmo Veneziale (Garden City, NY/Garden City) scored the only goal of the game in the 14th minute, as Vassar held on to shutout Manhattanville College 1-0 Wednesday afternoon. Both sides finished with 12 shots in the physical, back-and-forth contest, but it was Veneziale who found net to help his team win its fourth consecutive game. The Brewers improve to 5-0-1 on the year with the win, while Manhattanville drops to 2-2 on the season.

Manhattanville was able to generate pressure early, as the Valiants registered three shots in the opening ten minutes of the contest at Gordon Field.  The Brewers made their first attempt on goal count, as junior Jordan Palmer (Woodland Hills, CA/Agoura) played a well-placed cross into the box from the right side. After collecting the ball, Veneziale fired a shot into the right corner past the Valiant keeper to put his side ahead 1-0.

Neither side threatened again until the 30th minute, when Manhattanville sophomore Chris Fallaque found an opening inside the box. His shot looked good off the right foot, but sophomore goalkeeper Adam Warner (Tenafly, NY/Tenafly) stretched out for a nice save to preserve his team's one-goal advantage.

After allowing eight shots in the first half, the Brewer defense tightened up in the second limiting the Valiants to only four. VC almost found the net a second time in the 46th minute, when a corner kick from junior Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) found its way into the middle of the box. Back-to-back header shots from junior Nick Hess (Troy, NY/Averill Park) and senior Zach Nasipak (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) were saved and hit the cross bar (respectively) before Manhattanville was able to clear.

The Valiants made a last ditch effort in the final minutes moving all of their players into the attacking half, but the Brewers absorbed the pressure and hung on for the shutout victory.

The Brewers will be back in action for a marquee matchup against No. 5 ranked SUNY-Oneonta (4-0) on Saturday, September 13 on Gordon Field. Both teams remain unbeaten this season.
