Men's Tennis Knocked Out Of League Playoffs By RPI 5-2

ROCHESTER, NY (May 3, 2014) – The Vassar College men's tennis team was knocked out of the Liberty League Championships during the semifinals due to a hard-fought 5-2 loss to #2 seeded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon at University of Rochester's Goergen Indoor Courts hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology.
 
RPI jumped out to a 2-1 lead in doubles when Jarett Reiger and Brandon Mazzara took a big No. 1 doubles win over Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) and Alexander Luckmann (Berkeley, CA/Head-Royce School) 9-8 (12). The No. 2 doubles team of McKinley Grimes and LaBarre earned an 8-5 win over Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire Memorial) and Sha Huang (Austin, TX/Saint Stephens Episcopal).
 
The No. 3 Florida doubles team of Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Preparatory School) and Evan Udine (Delray Beach, FL/Boca Raton Community) earned the Brewers' first match point to close out the doubles action with a 9-8 (5) win.
 
The only singles player for Vassar to claim the win was Phelps at No. 3 over Mazzara with a 6-1, 6-1 score. Both Luckmann and Huang were leading their opponents at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively before play was stopped when Reiger took a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, ending the Brewers' hopes of getting to the finals.
