Women's Lacrosse Knocked Out Of League Playoffs By RPI 11-7

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 2, 2014) – The Vassar College women's lacrosse team was handed another devastating second half by the #1 seeded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers during the first round of the Liberty League Playoffs on Friday afternoon as the Brewers were eliminated 11-7.
 
Then Engineers (12-4) and the Brewers (11-5) opened the second half with a goal apiece before RPI went on a four-goal tear highlighted by Meg Colitz scoring two unassisted goals at 26:35 and 25:04, respectively.
 
Vassar's response to the 7-4 deficit was a two goal spree by freshman Julia Trudell (Newtown, CT/Newtown) off a Sophia Rosetti (Bethesda, MD/Holton Arms School) assist at 18:31 and when senior Phoebe Tzannes (Lexington, MA/Lexington) drove it home by herself at 16:51, bringing the score within one of the tie, 7-6 in favor of RPI.
 
The Engineers put the game out of reach with another four, uninterrupted scores from 10:44 to 4:39 before junior Dara Davis (Guilford, CT/Guilford) earned her hat-trick in what proved to be the final goal of 2014 for the Brewers as RPI gained possession and ran down the clock.
 
Vassar had an early 2-0 lead in the first when Tzannes and Davis scored just three and six minutes into the start. The Engineers answered with goals from Marissa Page and Mackenzie O'Neil before Davis recorded her second goal, closing out the half with the 3-2 Vassar lead.
 
The Engineers outshot the Brewers 25-16 and 18-11 in shots on goal. Junior Kate Pula (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) recorded a game-high seven saves while Erin Amarello only had four for RPI.
 
Tzannes led the Brewers, tying for the game-high of three caused turnovers and was 2-of-2 from free position. Junior Evie Toland (Nyack, NY/Nyack) caused two turnovers of her own.
