Davis Scores Six Goals In Women's Lax 18-11 Win Over Clarkson

POTSDAM, NY (April 18, 2014) – The Vassar College women's lacrosse team stifled a persistent Clarkson University group in both halves of Friday evening's game at Hantz Turf Field in Liberty League action and earned the 18-11 road win.

Junior attack Dara Davis (Guilford, CT/Guilford) recorded a double hat-trick and added an assist to lead the Brewers (8-4, 3-3 Liberty League). Davis was 2-of-4 from free position and also won one draw control. Sophomore attack Isabelle Goldstein (Belmont, MA/Belmont) posted a team-high two assists and scored a hat-trick plus-one for six total points.

Senior Phoebe Tzannes (Lexington, MA/Lexington), junior Sophia Rosetti (Bethesda, MD/Holton Arms School) and freshman Julia Trudell (Newtown, CT/Newtown) all had two goals while Tzannes and Rosetti were also credited with one assist.

Senior Malena Harrang (Bellevue, WA/Forest Ridge School) and sophomore Paige Abramowitz (Maplewood, NJ/Millburn) each scored once and senior Nicole Magney (Chevy Chase, MD/Maret School) added an assist to the Brewer win. Harrang was credited with the game-winning goal at 22:44 in the second half without the help of an assist.

Ashley Flick, Emma Jeffery, Christine Wright and Emma Oliver each scored twice to lead the Golden Knights (4-10, 1-5 Liberty League) on the evening. Wright also recorded the game-high in assists with three for a team-high five points.

The Brewers got the early 2-0 lead after a goal from Davis at 27:39 and Goldstein at 21:12 before the Knights returned the favor from Jeffery and a man-up goal from Wright. Vassar responded with three unanswered goals for a 5-2 advantage.

Clarkson put together a four-goal scoring run that gave it its only lead of the game 6-5 before the Brewers closed the half out with four back-to-back goals. The final goal of the half was scored by Goldstein with one second remaining for the 9-6 halftime lead.

Davis, Tzannes and Harrang combined for the opening spree and a Brewer 12-6 lead, before Clarkson's Flick interrupted it off an assist from Jessica Budaj at 18:40 during an extra-player opportunity, making it a 12-7 Vassar game.

Davis responded with three, unassisted goals all within a minute and a half of each other. Rosetti added to the Davis run with a goal at 11:28 in the second half before the Golden Knights tried to fight back with four goals of their own. The Brewers defense denied the comeback with goals from Rosetti and Abramowitz.

Junior Kate Pula (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Sacred Heart) played the majority of the game, recording four saves and allowing the first seven. Sophomore Mallory Tyler (Hollis, NH/Phillips Academy) jumped in front of the cage for the remaining seven minutes with three saves and four goals allowed.

Dani Tani earned the Clarkson loss with 16 goals allowed and stopped six of Vassar's 26 shots on goal.

The Brewers won 19 draw controls while the Golden Knights only grabbed 10. Vassar outshot Clarkson 31-19. Caused turnovers were not a factor in the game. The Brewers caused three while Clarkson only forced one despite the Knights turning the ball over 15 times compared to 13 turnovers by Vassar.

The Brewers will next travel to St. Lawrence University on Saturday, April 19 at 2:00 pm for their final road match of the regular season.
