A Look At The BrewersThe Brewers (10-4, 3-1 Liberty League) recently had a eight-match winning streak snapped in the match that determined the winner of the annual Seven Sisters Tennis Championships on Sunday when the #28 nationally-ranked Blue of Wellesley College topped the #29 Brewers 3-2. Vassar finished with a 3-1 record and a second place finish with the highlight performances of sophomore
Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) and this week's Liberty League Rookie of the Week,
Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University). Both players went undefeated with Becker going 4-0 with three different partners at No. 2 doubles and Yeates going 4-0 at No. 3 and No. 2 singles.
Becker now leads the Brewers with a 17-8 record in doubles. She is 9-4 in dual matches with a 5-4 No. 1 record. Sophomore
Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge Sacred Heart Academy) has won 15-of-24 singles matches this year, leading the Brewers and earning the best record at No. 2 singles, 7-5. Junior
Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) is 10-4 overall at No. 1 singles, having only played dual matches this season.
The Brewers are now a combined 77-54 in singles play for 2013-14 and have an above .500 record in every spot in the lineup, Liberty League play, dual matches and tournament play. The same goes for doubles. Vassar is 46-24 with the more-than-average records at all three positions, Liberty League, dual match and tournament action.
A Look At The RaptorsThe Raptors have had an extremely short spring season. They only recently got back to the courts on April 12 against Pratt Institute in which they won 7-2. Before that, Bard did not see action since October 16 with a 6-3 win over The Sage Colleges. Amanda Gan was the only Raptor to win both her No. 5 singles match and her No. 2 doubles match with Lia Soorenian.
Bard's singles position is led by the No. 2's of Albina Muzafarova and Nelle Plotkin. Plotkin leads with a 4-1 record and Muzafarova had a 3-2 history. The No. 2 position in doubles play has a combined 7-3 record with the team of Plotkin and Soorenian holding a 4-1 portion of it.
Against Bard All-TimeThe Brewers have never been defeated by the Raptors and have also never allowed a match point to be taken away from them. Vassar has only had 9-0 sweeps over Bard including a 5-0 win against the Hudson Valley locals in the opening round of the 2012 NCAA Championships when the Raptors were not in the Liberty League.
Playing Doubles With Her ClassmatesBecker won the Liberty League Rookie of the Week title due to her 4-0 record at No. 2 doubles during the annual Seven Sisters Championships. In all four of her matches, she played with one of her fellow freshman. She first teamed with
Hanna McGuire (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) against Mount Holyoke and then again during the final match against Wellesley. Becker paired with
Connie Yoo (Irvine, CA/Beckman) against Smith and Hallewell against Bryn Mawr.
Keep On Winning OnThe Brewers have 11 players/doubles combos with winning streaks of two or more. The doubles combo of Hallewell and Yeates has the largest streak in that series of play with a five-match run. Yeates also has a six-match spree in singles.
.500 ClubEvery singles player for Vassar currently has a .500 percent record or more in their previous 10 matches with the lowest being an exact .500 spot.
Up NextThe Brewers will next host the Engineers of #13 nationally-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday, April 19 at 12:00 pm. The weekend match and last match of the regular season before Liberty League playoffs is also designated as
Lindsay Kantor's (Westhampton Beach, NY/Westhampton Beach) Senior Day.
