Women's Tennis Falls In Final Match Of Seven Sisters To Wellesley 3-2

BRYN MAWR, PA (April 13, 2014) – The Vassar College women's tennis team's seven-match streak was extended to eight with a 5-0 win over the hosts of the Seven Sisters Tennis Championships, the Bryn Mawr Owls, but was then snapped 3-2 by nationally-ranked #28 the Wellesley College Blue in the championship match.
 
The Sunday match between the Brewers (10-4, 3-1 Liberty League) and the Blue (14-8) saw two, heated singles contests at No. 2 and No. 1.
 
Junior Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) took her matchup with Sojung Lee to three sets, having a second set comeback 7-5 win after dropping the first 2-6. In the final series, Lee walked away with the 10-4 victory at No. 1.
 
Freshman Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge School Sacred Heart) also went to a third set with Carina Chen at No. 2 but fell after winning the second set, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Sophomore Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) was the lone singles winner in the second match of the day. She bested Samantha Stone in matching 6-1 sets at No. 3.
 
In the doubles competition, Vassar and Wellesley split the two running matches. The Blue took No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-4 over senior Lindsay Kantor (Westhampton Beach, NY/Westhampton Beach) and sophomore Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township).
 
The freshman pair of Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) and Hanna McGuire (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) earned the Vassar win at No. 2 with identical 6-2 sets over Dasha Kostikina and Kendall Tada.
 
The early Sunday match against the Owls (7-11) was highlighted by the 6-0, 6-0 No. 1 doubles win by Kantor and Stauffer over Catherine Austin and Jenny Vogel. In singles play, freshman Connie Yoo (Irvine, CA/Beckman) had a solid, 6-2, 6-0 win against Tirsa Delate at No. 3.
 
Schapiro won at No. 1 6-2, 6-2 over Vivien Chen while Yeates finished the singles sweep at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Eliza Perocchi.
 
Hallewell and Becker teamed up for No. 2 doubles and a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Kendall Baller and Melina Koukoutchos.

Becker and Yeates were named to the Seven Sisters All-Tournament Team.
 
The Brewers will next host their two final matches of the regular season this coming week. First, they round out Liberty League play on Wednesday, April 16 at 4:00 pm against Hudson Valley local foe, the Bard College Raptors. Then they will welcome in the #17 team in the country, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers on Saturday, April 19 at 12:00 pm. Saturday's match is also Senior Day, where Kantor's four years of play at Vassar will be celebrated.
