Box Score SCHENECTADY, NY (April 12, 2014) – With just under five minutes to play and the Vassar College women's lacrosse team down by two to Liberty League rival Union College, the Dutchwomen piled on four goals in three minutes to keep the Brewers at bay, 16-11 at Frank Bailey Field.
Both the Brewers (7-4, 2-3 Liberty League) and the Dutchwomen (7-4, 5-1 Liberty League) were tied 6-6 going into the half. Unfortunately for Vassar, the 7-2 game-ending run that Union built starting with a pass from Maggie Comiskey to Emily McGrail for the lead-capturing goal at 24:34 was too much to overcome and gave the Brewers a weekend record of 0-2.
Things looked to be well in the hands of Vassar as the team got an early 4-0 lead after the first 10 minutes of play with both junior
Dara Davis (Guilford, CT/Guilford) and sophomore
Isabelle Goldstein (Belmont, MA/Belmont) had one score and one assist each in that spree. Both scores were unassisted while Goldstein's helper was given to senior
Malena Harrang (Bellevue, WA/Forest Ridge School) at 29:14 and Davis's pass went to senior
Phoebe Tzannes (Lexington, MA/Lexington) at 19:55.
The first half was exactly the definition of mirroring. Since Vassar scored four, Union responded with four of their own. The Brewers then found twine twice, and then answered by the Dutchwomen's two half-ending goals.
Davis led the Brewers with four goals and one assist but was overshadowed by Union's Emily McGrail who scored six times and helped on four others for a game-high 10 points.
This was the first game that the Brewers' freshmen corps didn't score a goal. Top freshman
Julia Trudell (Newtown, CT/Newtown) had her scoring streak end on the day as well, not being able to get her two shots on goal to get past Jen Hughes.
Hughes made eight saves on the day in her 60 minutes while Vassar's junior goalie
Kate Pula (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) recorded the game-high 12 saves. Union outshot Vassar 32-24 in total and 28-19 on target.
The Brewers will next continue to hop on a bus as they head to Potsdam, NY to face Liberty League foe Clarkson University on Friday, April 18 at 4:00 pm. Then on Saturday, April 19, they head to Canton, NY to meet St. Lawrence University for a 2:00 pm game start.
