Vassar Women's Lacrosse Falls In League Play To Herons 18-13

Box Score

GENEVA, NY (April 11, 2014) – An eight-goal effort from William Smith College's Hannah Connolly lifted the Herons to an 18-13 win over the visiting Vassar College women's lacrosse team on Friday evening at Boswell Field.

Junior Dara Davis (Guilford, CT/Guilford) led the Brewers with a four-point showing from two scores and two assists. Senior Phoebe Tzannes (Lexington, MA/Lexington) was 2-for-2 on her free position shots and added another goal for her fourth scoring hat-trick of the season.

Both sophomore Isabelle Goldstein (Belmont, MA/Belmont) and freshman Julia Trudell (Newtown, CT/Newtown) had two goals and one assist. Senior Malena Harrang (Bellevue, WA/Forest Ridge School) posted two goals while senior Zoe Ripecky (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius College Preparatory) and sophomore Kim Mulvehill (Sudbury, MA/Chapel Hill-Chauncey Hall) recorded one score each. Junior Sophia Rosetti (Bethesda, MD/Holton Arms School) earned an assist, rounding out the point-earners for the Brewers (7-3, 2-2 Liberty League).

Besides Connolly's eight goals, she also tacked on an assist. Katie Sipple followed with four scores and three helpers while Geneva Calder posted two and two. Kate Byrne was the Herons' (4-7, 4-1 Liberty League) final multi-goal scorer with two.

The Herons got things rolling in their favor early in the game. Within the first 10 minutes of play, the hosts were enjoying a 3-1 lead with Vassar's lone goal coming from Goldstein at 25:10. Allie Flaherty scored an unassisted goal at 9:16 to give William Smith a 9-1 lead before the Brewers were able to compile any sort of comeback.

Davis managed to find Trudell for Vassar's second goal of the game at 6:46. The Brewers managed to end the first half with a 4-2 run in the final five minutes. All but one of the Vassar scores were assisted by either Rosetti, Davis or Trudell.

Davis, Tzannes and Trudell busted a big Vassar run to start the second half with back-to-back-to-back unassisted goals. The spree brought the Brewers within three, 12-9. An ensuing 4-1 William Smith run later proved to keep a Vassar win out of the books, despite the Brewers outscoring the Herons 3-2 in the final 12 minutes of play.

Junior Kate Pula (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) only made two saves out of the 14 shots on goal that were fired in her first half. Fellow junior goalie Hilary McDonnell (Blue Bell, PA/The Springside School) came in for relief in the second half, also recording two saves but allowing the six to slip by. Pula was credited with the loss.

Sarah Honan got the win for the Herons, playing the whole hour and making 10 saves out of Vassar's 23 shots on goal.

The Brewers will next travel to Schenectady, NY to face the Dutchwomen of Union College on Saturday, April 12 at 4:00 pm in Liberty League action.
