POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 28, 2014) – In a very high-pressured midfield game, the Vassar College women's lacrosse team earned a win in its first Liberty League matchup of the year 7-6 over the visiting Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College at Weinberg Field on Friday evening.
Senior
Phoebe Tzannes (Lexington, MA/Lexington) was the Brewer's (6-1, 1-0 Liberty League) highlight player, scoring a hat-trick, recovering five draw controls, three ground balls and forcing two caused turnovers. She also was a perfect, 1-1 from free position shots and scored the game's only man-up goal that tied the game 7-7 with 10:06 left in the second half.
Freshman
Julia Trudell (Newtown, CT/Newtown) got the game-winner less than a minute later at 9:17 and from there on out, it was the Brewer defense and pressure offense that held the Thoroughbreds (1-6, 0-1 Liberty League) to their first Liberty League loss and sixth loss in a row.
With 1:24 left in the game, Skidmore called a timeout, deep in the Brewer's attack zone. When play resumed, junior
Jacqueline Palma (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset Junior-Senior) caused Skidmore's Tyler Phillips to drop the ball where a struggle for possession from both sides ensued and Vassar's freshman
Brittany Botticelli (Commack, NY/Commack) grabbed the loose ball.
It was her second ground ball of the game and it gave Vassar enough to successfully clear into the Thoroughbred defensive zone. After some clock management and a Brewer turnover, Skidmore had 20 seconds to get the ball down the field and possibly tie it, but Vassar's sophomore
Isabelle Goldstein (Belmont, MA/Belmont) intercepted a pass from Rachel Talanian, ensuring the home team's win.
After an early Vassar 3-1 lead, keyed by Goldstein's back-to-back goals at 19:40 and 16:21, respectively, the Thoroughbreds buried three, unanswered scores for a 4-3 lead at halftime.
Tzannes opened the second period with her first of three goals, tying the game 4-4 before Peggy Healey assisted on both of Skidmore's second half scores from Phillips and Spencer Morgan, respectively. The pair of goals gave the Thoroughbreds their first two-goal lead of the game.
Both teams only missed the goal completely twice in the second half, with both goalies playing the entire hour. Skidmore's Megan Kolopsky made eight saves on the 15 Vassar shots on goal while junior
Kate Pula (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) recorded three first half stops from nine shots on target.
The Brewers received plenty of help from the get-go. They won six draw controls in each half while keeping Skidmore to only one in the first and three in the second. Tzannes's grabs off the start where more than double any player on the field.
Junior
Evie Toland (Nyack, NY/Nyack) tied Talanian for the game-high in ground balls with five each. Palma added four and recorded a game-best six caused turnovers.
The Brewers will next host the reigning Liberty League Champions, the Engineers of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 pm.
