DANBURY, CT (March 25, 2014) – The Vassar College women's lacrosse team had eight different players score in its 16-8 win over the Colonials of Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday evening at the Western Athletic Complex.
Juniors
Leigh Anne Baldwin (Simsbury, CT/Westminster School) and
Dara Davis (Guilford, CT/Guilford) each had hat-tricks in the win for the Brewers (5-1). The Colonials (1-4) were led by the two-goal efforts of Destinee Carey, Kirsten Hudock and Hyla Costello.
Baldwin also added an assist, making her the points leader for Vassar on the evening.
The Brewers got started with a five-goal spree in the first half with back-to-back unassisted goals from senior
Zoe Ripecky (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius College Preparatory). Both were her only scores of the night and a season-high. Baldwin also scored twice in the run, getting her second just before West Conn got itself on the board with goals from Carey and Elena Gayton.
Davis scored on man-up and even-strength opportunities in response to the Colonial threat, starting a six-goal run and giving Vassar the 11-2 lead. Senior
Nicole Magney (Chevy Chase, MD/Maret School) also earned her season-best with the two goals, closing out the first half.
The Colonials put the pressure on the Brewers in the second half, outscoring the visitors 6-5 including a three-score series featuring two man-up goals coming from Costello and Hudock, respectively.
After Baldwin got her third goal and Vassar's last of the game at 3:12, sophomore goalie
Mallory Tyler (Hollis, NH/Phillips Academy) put on a performance that kept the score at 16-8 in favor of the Brewers. She recorded four saves including three in a row in the final minute of play, caused a turnover followed by a ground ball and then grabbed another loose ball just 46 seconds later. She played the final 7:35 of the game, finishing with the four stops and only allowed one goal to slip by.
Junior
Kate Pula (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) played the entire first half with three saves and then junior
Hilary McDonnell (Blue Bell, PA/The Springside School) made six saves to start the second half.
The Brewers out-recovered ground balls over the Colonials 35-29 led by freshman
Julia Trudell (Newtown, CT/Newtown) who had five. She also netted two goals and won four draw controls on the night. Costello had the game-high seven ground balls for the Colonials and also six caused turnovers and six turnovers of her own.
The Brewers will next host the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College on Friday, March 28 at 4:00 pm to open their Liberty League play on Weinberg Field. Then on Saturday at 3:00 pm, they host the Engineers of reigning Liberty League champions and #20 in the nation, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
