COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (March 14, 2014) – Four players of the Vassar College women's lacrosse team had three or more goals in the Brewers' (1-1) 15-8 win over the Tigers (5-2) of Colorado College on Friday evening at Washburn Field during their spring break trip.
Junior
Dara Davis (Guilford, CT/Guilford) was a perfect 4-of-4 on her free position shots while sophomore
Isabelle Goldstein (Belmont, MA/Belmont) had four goals of her own during Friday's first win of the 2014 season. Senior
Phoebe Tzannes (Lexington, MA/Lexington) and freshman
Julia Trudell (Newtown, CT/Newtown) each recorded hat-tricks. Tzannes also added an assist.
"We were able to slash our way through their defense to get some scores early," said head coach
Judy Finerghty. "We started stalling with about six minutes left to eat up the clock but we also had to fight and continue to play to the final whistle because neither side really let up. Also the fact that we won so many draw controls and had the majority of the ball possession was key on the offensive side of play today."
The Brewers scored the first five goals of the game with the starter being from Davis' player-up, free position goal less than two minutes into the game. Trudell added the second goal less than a minute later from a pass by senior
Malena Harrang (Bellevue, WA/Forest Ridge School). Tzannes got her first netter just 32 seconds after and Goldstein and Davis piled on the next two in the following three minutes of the first half.
Tzannes placed two, back-to-back goals at 6:30 and 5:45, giving the Brewers the 9-3 lead with the latter proving to be the game-winner. Both goals were unassisted. Colorado's Virginia Logue took a pass from Molly Lyons with 2:36 remaining, ending the first half scoring and bringing the Tigers within five goals of tying the Brewer 9-4 lead.
Davis had a repeat goal of the first half, scoring in the first two minutes with Goldstein adding another unassisted netter in the 24th minute of play. Senior
Zoe Ripecky (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius College Preparatory) got her first goal of the season when Tzannes found her open for the shot at 21:22 before Colorado's Hannah Lyons and Madeline Pitkin posted their first goals of the second.
Junior
Sophia Rosetti (Bethesda, MD/Holton Arms School) was credited with her first of two assists when she spotted Trudell at 14:07. The second helper came after Goldstein got her fourth goal at 3:09 when she passed to Trudell at 1:16 for the game-ending 15-8 go-ahead.
The Brewers only recovered nine first half ground balls in comparison to the Tigers' 13. Colorado finished the game with a 24-23 loose ball advantage. Freshman
Brittany Botticelli (Commack, NY/Commack) led the Brewers with five recoveries while Sheridan Gribbon grabbed six for Tigers and the game-high.
"The defense was great today. Everyon played as a cohesive unit, they wreaked havoc on the attackers and played well and smart together," Coach Finerghty stated. "We weren't fouling a ton and just sliding well as a group. All in all, it was just a great team effort on both sides of the field with everyone really contributing to the win. Colorado had a tough time getting to goal because of all of those factors coming together."
Junior
Jacqueline Palma (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset Junior-Senior) and Colorado's Mary Taussig had the game-bests, three caused turnovers. The Tigers held the team 8-7 advantage in the statistic.
Martha Smith earned the loss with only five saves on the Brewers' 20 on-goal shots. Junior
Kate Pula (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) recorded four saves out of 12 shots on target. Junior
Hilary McDonnell (Blue Bell, PA/The Springside School) played the final eight minutes in goal, recording no saves and allowing no goals.
"We came out here for competitive games and this was no walk in the park by any stretch despite what the score says," Finerghty said.
The Brewers end their stay in Colorado when they next face Denison University on Sunday, March 16 at 4:00 pm at Colorado College.
