ANNADALE-ON-HUDSON, NY (February 4, 2014) – The Vassar College men's basketball team pulled together a winning 26-18 run in the final 10 minutes of play to steal the win out of the grasps of the Bard College Raptors, 79-75 in Liberty League action Tuesday night at the Stevenson Athletic Center.
Sophomore guard Johnny Mrlik (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Preparatory) scored 12 of his 22 total points in that run that nullified the Raptors' 57-54 lead with 10:14 to go in the second half. Bard (5-12, 0-8 LL) held a lead over the Brewers (15-3, 7-2 LL) for 27 minutes, or 68 percent of the game despite the eight lead changes that occurred throughout the evening.
Junior forward Luka Ladan (Belmont, MA/Belmont) added six points to that game-winning run. Sophomore guard Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) put away another five points while senior forward Evan Carberry (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) and freshman forward Otis Osman (Far Hills, NJ/Pingry School) supplemented the spree with an additional three points.
Ladan finished the night with 18 points and four rebounds. Wasyl topped with 15 tallies and five boards while junior forward Alex Snyder (Rutland, VT/Rutland) posted 12 points and grabbed seven caroms. Carberry led the Brewers under the boards with eight grabs.
Mrlik dished out four assists and Snyder passed three helpers.
The Brewers' second half shooting spelled out the victory for them, shooting 13-of-23 from the floor (56.5 percent), 3-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc (50 percent) and 14-of-17 from the charity line (82.35 percent). Mrlik made 9-of-10 free throws on Tuesday evening. Snyder was a perfect 4-for-4 and Ladan sunk in 4-of-6.
Lamar Powell posted the game-high 24 points, going 4-of-7 from three-point land and totaling 7-of-16 from the floor. Alex Fabean-Scotch was the only other Raptor to score double digits with 18 points and he also was the game-high helper with five assists. Pat Lichtenstein pulled in the most rebounds with 11.
Bard shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the floor, 39.4 percent (13-of-33) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from the charity line on the evening.
The Brewers will next travel to Rochester, NY to face the Tigers of Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday, February 7 at 8:00 pm. The Raptors will next face the Statesmen of Hobart College on the road Friday at 8:00 pm as well.
