What to Look For
The Brewers (14-3, 6-2 Liberty League) set a new milestone in Vassar history when they defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 100-83 last Tuesday. This was the first time in two years that the Brewers scored over 100 points and the first time they had ever breached that scoring line against a Liberty League school (excluding Bard in 1998's 106-77 win who was not part of the Liberty League). Junior Luka Ladan (Belmont, MA/Belmont) led four Brewers in double-digit scoring with his new career-high of 26 points. Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) also surpassed 20 points with 21.
Sophomore guard Johnny Mrlik (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Preparatory) leads Vassar with 17.4 points per game with Wasyl in pursuit with 12.6 and Ladan averaging 12.1 a showing. Junior forward Alex Snyder (Rutland, VT/Rutland) is pulling in 8.2 rebounding average. Senior Evan Carberry (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) is averaging 6.1 boards and Mrlik is grabbing 6.0 caroms a night.
The Brewers are averaging 71.6 points per game while giving only 63.8. Vassar is shooting 47.9 percent from the floor and 40.1 percent from the three-point arc. The Brewers' free throw shooters average 70.9 percent. The players pull in 39.5 rebounds a game and also dish out 13.2 assists.
A Look at the Raptors
The Raptors have dropped three straight Liberty League games since their defeat in the Athletics and Fitness Center on January 21. Most recently, Bard was defeated by Skidmore College, 83-37 on Friday. Two separate runs by the Thoroughbreds that ended the first half, started the second half and featured 20+ points spelled trouble for the Raptors. The defeat tied for the worst Liberty League loss for Bard since joining in 2011-12. Lamar Powell led with nine points.
The Raptors are being outscored by their opponents 74.6-64.1 a game. Their three-point shooters hold the advantage, shooting 31.5 percent and allowing 30.4 percent. Powell leads Bard with 20.0 points per game while Alex Fabean-Scotch is following with 11.1 tallies. Siondueh Burnette is pulling in 6.6 caroms a night and also adds 10.3 points to the scoring averages.
Against Bard All-Time
The Vassar-Bard series record is in favor of the Brewers 26-4. Three of Bards wins came in the past two years. The Raptors won both games in 2012 and the first of 2013. Bard's only other win occurred in 1991. The Brewers defeated Bard in their last meeting 66-59. The Raptors have never outscored Vassar by more than four points.
Defense! Defense! Defense!
The Brewers are allowing the least amount of points per game in the Liberty League with an average of 63.8. Due to the lack of opponent scoring, Vassar also leads with the largest scoring difference of +7.8. The Brewer's have allowed offenses to only make 35.7 percent of their shots from the floor and 28.2 percent from the three-point arc.
For Three!!
Vassar's arc-specialists are leading the Liberty League with 128 of their 319 three-point attempts being made. That's an average of 40.1 percent. Clarkson University is the next closest team with 37.7 percent of their three-pointers finding the net. Vassar averages 7.5 shots from three-point land a game.
Right On Target
The Brewers lead the Liberty League in field goal percentage. They have made 434 of their 907 shot attempts for a shooting percentage of 47.9 percent. The Brewers also shot 70.9 percent from the charity line.
Up Next
The Brewers' will next travel to Rochester, NY to face Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday, February 7 at 8:00 pm.
