A Look At The Brewers
The Brewers (1-0, 0-0 Liberty League) earned a solid 8-1 win over last weekend's visitors, the Muhlenberg College Mules. Sophomore
Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy Sacred Heart) defeated Sharon Resnikoff 6-0, 6-4 in No. 5 singles to clinch the match-winning point Saturday afternoon at the Walker Field House. She then teamed with freshman
Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge School Sacred Heart) and earned an 8-6 victory over Sara Finger and Resnikoff.
The Brewers earned a spot in the Liberty League weekly awards this past week. Junior
Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) was named the Performer of the Week for her 6-2, 6-2 No. 1 singles win over Nina Sanders and then her 8-1 No. 1 doubles victory against Sanders and Emily Szulman. The two matches where Schapiro's firsts since returning to Poughkeepsie after a semester abroad in Italy.
The Brewers are at a combined 35-30 singles record including their 30-29 tournament play. The doubles squads are 21-14 with the flawless 3-0 after Saturday's dual match. Freshman
Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) and Hallewell are 9-4 in doubles while Hallewell also is recording a 9-4 mark in singles.
A Look At The Thoroughbreds
Skidmore recently took an easy 9-0 win over the Dutchwomen of Union College. Melissa Hirsch cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Mina Hsia and won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles with Madeline Benn. The No. 1 singles match was the only one where Union did not win a single game besides No. 3 doubles.
Against Skidmore All-Time
The Brewers and Thoroughbreds are deadlocked at 18-18 in the two programs' series record. Skidmore has won the last five meetings including two Liberty League Championship matches. The Thoroughbreds defeated Vassar 9-0 in the regular season and 6-2 at the Liberty League tournament last year.
All Around The Nation
The nine players on the Vassar roster come from seven different states. The majority of the Brewers come from California and all three of them are the freshmen, Becker,
Connie Yoo (Irvine, CA/Beckman) and
Hanna McGuire (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa). Despite Vassar being a New York school, only one player comes from the Empire State and that is senior captain
Lindsay Kantor (Westhampton Beach, NY/Westhampton Beach). The other states that are represented are District of Columbia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas and Louisiana.
All-American Status
Schapiro earned her title as an All-American in doubles when she teamed with
Ava Sadeghi in last year's Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northeast Regional Tournament and defeated Teru Greene and Kiara Ocaslo of William Smith College 6-2, 6-3. Schapiro has only teamed with players hailing from California in her three years at Vassar. Besides Sadeghi and this year's Becker, Schapiro also doubled with Joy Backer '12 and Jennifer Beckerman '12 in her freshman year. The only exception to the strictly-California rule is
Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, PA, Manheim Township) in last year's Lindsay Morehouse Invitational.
Up Next
The Brewers will next board a plane to California where they begin their spring break trip against Principia College on Sunday, March 9 at 2:00 pm in Irvine, CA. They will also face Bowdoin College, Pomona College, California Institute of Technology and Chapman University before returning for a March 29 away match against St. Lawrence University.
