A Look At The FieldThe Liberty League Men's Squash Championship is set for this Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 22-23, at Vassar College's Kenyon Hall.
The tournament is played in a round-robin format among the five competing teams - Bard, Hobart, Rochester, St. Lawrence and Vassar. The team with the most head-to-head wins is crowned Liberty League Champion. St. Lawrence, ranked No. 2 in the latest College Squash Association (CSA) poll behind top-ranked Harvard, will be seeking its second straight title after halting a string of six straight championships by the University of Rochester.
The College squash association ranks the top 64 teams in the country. Four of the Liberty League teams are ranked among the top 64. In addition to St. Lawrence; Rochester is ranked 5th, Hobart 26th and Vassar 57th.
The St. Lawrence-Rochester match, held during the 1 p.m. time slot on Sunday, has been the deciding match for the league championship for several years. The match also has important national implications for two of the top collegiate squash programs in the country.
St. Lawrence returns a senior-laden roster from last year's team. The CSA ranked the top 100 players at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season. The Saints return seven competitors from the top 100 – junior Amr Khalifa (No. 2), senior Anderson Good (55), senior Chris Fernandez (56), senior Kyle Ogilvy (67), senior Sebastian Riedelsheimer (94) and senior Duncan Maxwell (100). Rochester returns three competitors from the top 20 and four ranked players overall - junior Neil Cordell (No. 7), sophomore Mario Yanez Tapia (9), sophomore Ryosei Koboyashi (11) and junior William Mohr (68). Unlike St. Lawrence, Rochester has no seniors on its roster.
Hobart returns a pair of sophomores who each earned All-Liberty League a season ago in Beau Orchard and Felipe Pantle. Hobart will be looking to pull an upset, as the Statesmen are in search of their third team Liberty League title. Both host Vassar College and Bard College enter the weekend trying to pick up their first Liberty League titles, as Vassar's
Vincent Mencotti (Birmingham, MI/Brother Rice) and Matt Lampeter (BC) will pace each team.
Leading The WayVassar currently has two players on the squad with winning records, as sophomore
Vincent Mencotti and junior
Tim Boycott (Mbabane, Swaziland/Waterford Kamhlaba UWCSA) each are sporting 3-2 records on the season.
Noah Kulick (Cambridge, MA/Beaver Country Day) and
Richard Bryenton (Knoxville, TN/West) each have two wins apiece.
Ay-Ay CaptainVassar College is led by senior captains
Ryan Kurtzman (Chicago, IL/Latin School of Chicago) and
David Garfinkel (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck), both in their first season of being team captains.
Break ThroughSenior
Ryan Kurtzman is still looking for his first win of the season, but he's been in all five of his matches thus far. He has taken four of five to at least four sets, dropping one in five games in the Hudson Valley Individual Tournament.
Up NextThe Brewers will take a weekend off before hosting Tufts University Friday, December 5 at 6:30 p.m. in Kenyon Hall.
