Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 4, 2014) – Vassar scored a goal in each half, and shutout its opponent for the second straight game as the Brewers earned a 2-0 victory over Hobart College Saturday afternoon. The win secures a 3-0 start in Liberty League play for Vassar; the best ever in school history as the team moves to 9-3-1 overall on the season. Hobart drops to 6-4-1 (1-2 LL) with the loss.
Rain poured from the skies for most of the game at Gordon Field, as Vassar quickly established itself in the attacking end at the opening kickoff. Less than a minute into the game, the Brewers saw their first real chance off a corner kick, as senior
Zach Nasipak (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) put his head on the cross. The ball ricocheted towards the left side of the net, but Statesmen goalie Mike Lucas was there to make the stop.
After prodding on attack in the opening phases of the game, Vassar broke through in the 19
th minute on a great sequence of play starting in the backline. Freshman
Tanner Sands (Draper, UT/Juan Diego) played in a perfect cross on the right wing, which found fellow freshman
Reid Smith (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day School) open on the left side of the box. Smith one-timed a pass across the middle to junior
Jordan Palmer (Woodland Hills, CA/Agoura), who knocked in a shot off the right foot to put the Brewers ahead 1-0.
Both sides flirted with opportunities throughout the remainder of the half, but the score remained 1-0 Vassar as the teams took shelter in the locker rooms at halftime.
In the second half Palmer had himself involved in another scoring play, after playing a streaking
Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) down the right wing in the 59
th minute. Jennings wound up and blasted a shot from 10 yards out, which deflected off a covering Statesmen defender and into the net.
With time winding down in the half, Vassar held onto its 2-0 lead as the team went to work thwarting any comeback attempts from the visitors. Hobart pressured hard, but the Brewers remained stingy on defense allowing only one shot in the final ten minutes of play.
Sophomore
Adam Warner (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) turned away all four shots that came his way to earn his second consecutive shutout.
VC will enter a brief hiatus from game action over the next week, before returning to the pitch October 17 & 18 when the team faces Clarkson and St. Lawrence (respectively) on the road.
Note: For the first time since 2009, the Brewers won both games in a Liberty League weekend. VC defeated Skidmore 3-1 on October 9 and Union 3-2 on October 10 during the 2009 season to last sweep opponents in back-to-back conference games. -VASSAR-
