Box Score NEW PALTZ, NY (October 29, 2014) -- The Vassar College women's volleyball team battled hard and forced a fourth set with hosting New Paltz Wednesday, but couldn't come away with the upset win in falling 3-1 in non-conference action from the Hawk Center. NP won with scores of 25-11, 27-25, 28-30 and 25-22.Â
The Hawks (26-5) had no problem taking a 1-0 lead in the first set, hitting a whopping .355 in the opening game. The second set saw New Paltz take a early lead, but Vassar (12-17) kept the set close and eventually evened the score at 12 on a ace by freshman
Alex Sams (Los Angeles, CA/Beverly Hills).Â
After the Hawks pulled back ahead 17-15, the Brewers responded with five straight points to take a 20-17 advantage. New Paltz answered with a 4-0 run of its own to take a 23-21 lead, but VC didn't go away, forcing extra play after an ace by
Sierra Tobin (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz). In the end, the Hawks earned the final two points of the set to pick up a 27-25 win and a two-set margin.Â
The Brewers trimmed the match margin to 2-1 in the third set, hitting a very strong .238 in the game while posting 17 kills in the period. The win didn't come easy though, as Vassar had to outlast the Hawks in a set that had five lead changes and 13 tie scores. With the score tied at 28, VC got kills by Sams and sophomore
Sarah Roberts (Port Washington, NY/P.D. Schrieber) to take the game.Â
In the final set, Vassar had a lead as late as 20-19, but four straight points by the Hawks were too much for the Brewers to overcome. Over the four sets, the two teams exchanged leads 16 times and were tied on 35 occassions.
The Brewers had a very balanced attack on Wednesday evening, as seniors
Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco) and
Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucy's Priory) each had a team-best nine kills. Fellow senior
Taylor Mosley (Rowlett, TX/Parish Episcopal School) posted eight terminations, and
Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) added five kills, six digs and a team-best 26 assists.Â
Defensively, junior libero
Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) had a historic night for Vassar, as she chalked up 22 digs to move into second all-time in the digs category. The junior now has 1,514 digs, which leapfrogged Kathleen Landry '01 and her 1,507 digs.Â
The Hawks were paced by the game-high of 17 kills by Becca Borquist, while Alli Coleman and Morgan Roessler each had 11 terminations apiece. Maddie Zwickl had 40 assists, and Rachel Pierson finished with 10 digs in the win for NP.Â
Vassar will finish its 2014 season with Senior Day on Saturday in Kenyon Hall against The Sage Colleges at 1 p.m. in non-conference action. New Paltz will travel to the Skidmore Tournament this weekend, battling Union College, Farmingdale State and host Skidmore.Â
