Box Score SPRINGFIELD, MA (October 10, 2014) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team snapped a four-match losing skid on Friday evening, dispatching of Westfield State University in three games in day one of action at the Tom Hay Invitational, hosted by Springfield College.
The Brewers (10-12), who were playing their sixth consecutive contest on the road, had no problems winning with scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-23. Vassar hit an even .200 for the game, which was the highest since a three-set win over St. Lawrence University back on September 19. The 32 kills for a three-setter were also the most since that SLU match.
Vassar College had to fight some in the first set, as the Owls (6-16) led 8-7 after 15 points of action. Vassar responded with 10 of the next 11 points of the set, pulling away for a commanding 11-point win in the first set. Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco) to double their lead.
In the final game, Vassar jumped out to a big nine-point lead at 16-7, but Westfield rallied with 11 straight points to take an 18-16 lead. Vassar showed some resolve, righting the ship and responding by earning a 25-23 win to clinch the match.

Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) had 19 digs in the match. The 19 digs for Hallum were the second most in a three-set match this year for the standout defensive specialist, also celebrating her 21
st birthday Friday.
Sophomore
Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) had another balanced stat line with five kills, 13 assists and three digs, while fellow setter
Sophia Tiajoloff (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) added 12 assists, five aces and four digs. The Brewers were great both serving and serve receiving Friday, chalking up 15 aces, holding the Owls to just four. Senior
Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucys Priory) tied for the match lead with five service aces.
The Brewers held Westfield State to just 24 kills on 85 attacks, forcing the Owls into 18 errors. Courtney Ryan had a match-best 18 assists for WSU, while Victoria Sutphen tied for the match-high with 11 kills.
Vassar College will be back in action tomorrow in the Tom Hay Invitational, taking on host Springfield College at 10 a.m. and Smith College at 12:30 p.m. in non-conference play.
