SCHENECTADY, NY (January 11, 2014) – The Vassar College men's basketball team lost its first game since the season opener against Clark University in November to Union College 79-74 in Liberty League action on Saturday at the Viniar Athletic Center.
The Brewers (9-2, 1-1 LL) were previously on a nine-game win streak with the school record set at 10 from the 2007-08 team. Union's (4-6, 1-1 LL) first half lead of 38-28 proved to be the difference-maker in whether Vassar would continue the streak or not.
Five Dutchmen hit double-digit scoring and were led by Terell Winney's 16 points. William Hython (15), Deshon Burgess (14), Kevin Weckworth (12) and Ryan Whelpley (11) were the other Union players to score double-figures.
The Brewers were led by sophomore guard
Johnny Mrlik's (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Preparatory) game-high 20 points. Junior forward
Alex Snyder (Rutland, VT/Rutland) scored 15 points, sophomore guard
Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) hit for 14 and junior guard
Curtis Smith (Mastic, NY/Eastport South Manor) tallied 12 points for the Brewers.

Luka Ladan (Belmont, MA/Belmont) and freshman forward
Otis Osman (Far Hills, NJ/Pingry School) scored eight and five points off the bench, respectively.
The Brewers opened the second half with back-to-back Wasyl three-pointers that began their 19-10 run that nearly tied the game, 48-47. With 9:11 remaining to play, Smith hit a three-pointer that began a four minute, 10-5 run that gave Vassar its first tie, 65-65.
However, Union's Winney hit two three-pointers and two free throws, highlighting the Dutchmen's game-ending 14-9 run.
Snyder recorded a double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds while Ladan added 11. Whelpley led Union with 12 boards.
The Brewers will next host Hobart College on Friday, January 17 at 8:00 pm. Union will host the Golden Knights of Liberty League opponent Clarkson University on Friday at 8:00 pm as well.
