POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 22, 2013) – The Vassar College men's soccer team had everything go its way in the second half during its 4-0 win over visiting Maritime College on Sunday afternoon at Gordon Field.
Senior Juliano Pereira (Albany, CA/Albany) scored the first two goals of the game in the second half off of corner kicks. His first came within the first three minutes of the second half at 47:33. Sophomore Jordan Palmer (Woodland Hills, CA/Agoura) placed his corner kick in front of goal where Pereira redirected it for the 1-0 lead and what proved to be the game-winning goal.
"Nano" Pereira got his second goal off a header from a junior, Justin Mitchell (Layton, UT/Northridge) corner kick at 65:46. With literally no time for the Privateer defense to catch their breath, senior Rob Manukyan (Yerevan, Armenia/United Nations International School) found an open senior Adrien Demelier (Paris, France/Amity Regional) just outside of the 18 yard mark on the very next possession series.
Manukyan's pass traveled 10-15 yards and Demelier did the rest as he made a quick juke move around the Maritime defender and beat the keeper, Phil Marks for the comfortable, 3-0 lead.
Junior Tom Wiechert (Dana Point, CA/San Clemente) topped the day off with a cherry when freshman Stephen Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) sent a 12-yard cross pass from the left of the 18. Wiechert took the ball and after some of his fancy footwork, faked out the defender and was able to find the bottom left corner of the Patrick Kelleher-defended net.
Senior Ryan Grimme (Gahanna, OH/Gahanna Lincoln) had a very lax day in goal as the Brewer midfield and defense kept the Maritime offense to only two shots with none on goal. Marks recorded seven saves while Kelleher had three for Maritime.
The Brewer offense was extremely dominant in the shots and shots on goal categories. The Brewers had 14 of their 30 shots on goal compared to both of Maritime's shots being off target.
The Brewers did edge out the Privateers in fouls, 11-9 but also had the commanding advantage in corner kicks, 7-1.
The Brewers (5-2-1) will next host Kean University on Wednesday, September 25 at 4:00 pm. The Privateers (3-4-2) will next host Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's on Friday, September 27 at 7:00 pm in Throggs Neck, NY.
