Box Score 2 ALLENTOWN, PA – The Vassar College women's volleyball team chalked up wins over Misericordia University and Cedar Crest College Monday afternoon in a non-conference tri-match held at Cedar Crest to start the 2013 season.
The Brewers (2-0) opened the day with a 3-0 victory over Misericordia, winning with scores of 25-11, 25-21 and 25-13. VC jumped out to an early 9-4 lead over the Cougars (1-1), but MU rallied to pull to within three at 11-8. The Brewers would post a 10-1 run over the next 11 points to pull away for the 1-0 lead.
The second set was much closer, but VC would extend their match lead out to two games after hitting at a .351 clip in the second. The third and final set was all Brewers, as VC held Misericordia to just .065 hitting in the third. Junior
Taylor Mosley (Dallas, TX/Parish Episcopal School) led all hitters with 14 kills, while freshman
Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) had eight kills, four aces and five digs.
Senior
Jessie Ditmore (Santa Barbara, CA/Laguna Blanca) added seven kills for Vassar, and
Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucys Priory) finished with six kills, eight digs and two aces. Senior setter
Rose Carman (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) had 33 assists in the match, and sophomore libero
Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) chalked up a game-high 17 digs.
Vassar posted a .309 hitting percentage in its season opener, adding 13 service aces and 40 digs. Meghan Stack led the way for the Cougars, as she finished with 13 kills and six digs. Megan Curry nearly had a double-double for MU, posting 15 assists and nine digs.
In the second match of the night, the visiting Brewers had no problems dispatching of the Falcons in straight sets. The Brewers earned an early lead in the match, picking up a 25-13 victory in game one. The second set saw VC open up an 8-2 advantage before earning a 25-15 in set two. In the final game of the day, Cedar Crest made things interesting midway through the period but strong service from the Brewers down the stretch helped them notch a 25-15 win.
Miller had a team-best seven kills for Vassar, while Mosley added six kills and two aces. Pitre chalked up four aces to go with two solo blocks, and Carman added 15 assists and two service aces. VC hit .182 in the match with Cedar Crest, finishing with 25 kills in 66 attempts.
Vassar will now host the Vassar Invitational this Friday and Saturday in the Athletics and Fitness Center, as MIT, New York University, Stevens and Cortland State come to town. First serve of the tournament for Vassar is at 4 p.m. Friday against Stevens.
