POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 9, 2013) – The Vassar College women's lacrosse team put up a flawless defensive effort Tuesday evening at Weinberg Field, keeping visiting Old Westbury off the scoreboard for the duration of the game in an 11-0 shutout victory.
Stephanie Stone tallied two goals and an assist, while
Nicole Magney and
Zoe Ripecky also scored two goals each for the Brewers.
Lindsay Haggerty recorded a goal and an assist to help pace Vassar as well.
With the game's start delayed 20 minutes due to backed-up traffic keeping Old Westbury and the referees from the field, Vassar made up for lost time once the whistle blew by scoring four times in the first 3:07 to seize control of the contest for good. The Brewers spent much of the 60 minutes against the first-year Panthers program working on set plays and defense.
Vassar improves to 7-2 on the season with the win and remains unbeaten in non-conference play in 2013 (5-0). Old Westbury falls to 2-11 in its inaugural varsity season. The Brewers travel to Liberty League rival Skidmore for a 4:00pm game on Friday, while the Panthers visit Skyline Conference foe St. Joseph's (L.I.) at noon on Sunday.
Stone won four draw controls on the night, and
Enya Cunningham and
Caroline Stanton each scored their first career goals. Goalkeepers
Hilary McDonnell and
Mallory Tyler made two saves each in the first and second halves, respectively.
Michelle Rodriguez picked up four ground balls and goalie Sara Braverman made three saves for Old Westbury.
