Box Score

NEW YORK, NY (April 9, 2013) – The 11th-ranked Vassar College men's volleyball team dropped three closely contested sets Tuesday evening on the road against 10th-ranked rival New York University, falling 25-22, 25-23, 25-22 at the Coles Sports Center in lower Manhattan. Junior outside hitter Joe Pyne led the Brewers with 13 kills.

After coming up short 25-22 in the first set, Vassar initially went ahead 3-0 in Set 2 but soon found itself down by five points and in need of a rally. The Brewers nearly made it all the way back, scoring three straight points at the end only to be undone 25-23 by Phil Bueno's set-ending kill for the Violets. Vassar again came back from a four-point deficit in the third set to tie it 17-17 on a Pyne kill, but NYU would score the next two points and not trail again en route to the 25-22 clincher.

Vassar dropped to 19-12 on the season with the loss while NYU improved to 14-12. The two teams will meet again at 10:00 am this Saturday in the United Volleyball Conference tournament quarterfinals at Nazareth's Kidera Gymnasium in Pittsford, New York. The Brewers are the #5 seed in the league tourney while NYU is seeded fourth. The winner will take on either top-seeded host Nazareth or eighth-seeded Penn State-Behrend at 5:00 pm that afternoon in the semifinal round.

Pyne knocked down his 13 kills on 22 swings with just three errors en route to a .455 attack percentage. Senior outside hitter Charlie Caldwell hit .400 with nine kills and tied for the team lead in digs with six. Senior setter John Konow handed out 39 assists while senior libero Christian La Du collected six digs. Freshman middle hitter Kadeem Nibbs had six kills and hit .556 in the match.

Colin LaPorte led the Violets on the night with 12 kills and Keith Waddell added 11 kills. Connor Mortland notched 37 assists and seven digs while Waddell and Andrew Quirk also reached the seven-dig mark.
